Ross Chastain pulled off one of the coolest racings moves you will ever see in NASCAR to secure his spot in the season finale. The Trackhouse Racing driver rode the wall in the final two corners, gaining more than five spots in seconds. The video game-inspired move is trending around the world.
The NASCAR cup grid is split on the legality of the move. Some view it as a class move that deserves recognition. But, for a slight majority of the grid, it’s a dangerous move that needs to be banned. Former champions such as Kyle Larson and Joey Logano demanded rule changes from NASCAR to ban drivers from using such extreme actions on race day.
NASCAR chief operating officer Steve O’Donnell pointed out that they won’t change any rule, with just one race left in the season. He said, “But at this point in looking at it, it was a move that was within the rulebook, and really don’t think it’s right to adjust the rules when, for 35 races, we’ve been one way and throw a wrinkle in for the 36th,”.
NASCAR is okay with the backlash they might have with their current stand. Steve O’Donnell said, “At the end of the day, we recognize we’re the government, it’s our job to make the call. It’s not liked. And if you make half the folks happy and half angry, you usually hit the right tone with whatever call,”.

NASCAR reiterated that Ross Chastain’s move was legal
Steve O’Donnell pointed out that it’s the first time in the organization’s 75-year history that someone has pulled off a move like this. He added that no one expected Chastain to make the video game-inspired move.
“We’ve seen similar attempts but never successfully. In our 75-year history, no one has successfully done that. So, Ross pulled off a first that we all saw, that I don’t think anyone was thinking about. When you saw that, I think everyone has described [it] like a video game move,” Steve O’Donnell told on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
O’Donnell pointed out that though the move is within the rules, they have had deep discussions internally about it. He said, “[It was] certainly within the rules … As with anything you see for the first time, you’ve got to take a look. We’ve had a number of discussions internally about that move and all the what-ifs,”.
The rule changes will be discussed in the off-season after the finale. Steve O’Donnell said, “But it’s within the rules, and [we] believe that’s where we’ll be for Phoenix as well and something we can evaluate in the offseason,”.
