NASCAR’s second visit to Atlanta Motor Speedway this season proved to be a tough and competitive race, as Chase Elliott of the No. 9 HMS Chevy Camaro ZL1 won it for the first time at his home track. When Corey Lajoie went out, Chase Elliott had to fend off Ross Chastain and stave off the onslaught to finish the race in P1.

Erick Jones, who pilots the No. 43 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Petty GMS Motorsports had one of the closest runs to win he had in a long time at Atlanta as he finished P4 under the yellow flag. With 6 Top 10 finishes so far the 28-year-old is yet to get his performance up compared to last year as his winless run entered 105 rounds of cup racing.

Erick jones did have a chance to take a shot at winning as he might have had an opportunity to take the lead away from Chase Elliott and Ross Chastain who were having an intense dual up front if not for the yellow flag that came out. Now Erick Jones has come forth expressing his thoughts on the race day outing and a potential shot at a win.

Erick Jones acknowledged that he had a good outing at the track and his chevy was quick it can have more speed. He went on to say that the handling issues were constraining them from breaking out and doing some things which slowed them down. He points out that he had a good run when they had the lead and it’s nice to get back in the top five and points.

I thought our day was good. Our No. 43 FOCUSfactor Chevy was quick. We needed a tick more speed. I think we had to do some things for handling that slowed us down a little bit. We were up there, but I couldn’t really break out and do much. When I got in the lead there, I wasn’t really quick enough to hold it myself. We were close. It feels good to just have a good race. We’ve had a rough month, so it’s nice to get a top-five and get some points,” Erick Jones said.

He went on to add that the result was motivating and added the fact that they were really good at superspeedways and 1.5 miles races all year. Erick Jones pointed out that he came really close to a win more than a few times at Talladega, Daytona, and twice so far in Atlanta and they just need one of these outings to play out for them in the run for the playoff.

It’s motivating. I think our superspeedway and 1.5-mile stuff has been so good all year. We were close here in the spring in the end and we were close again today. We were close at Talladega and close in Daytona. So, in all the superspeedway races, we’ve been really fast. We’re there, we just need to have one play out for us,” Erick Jones added.

He went on to say that he would have loved to see the last lap run out as he had a chance at turns three and four to go for the dance between the intense dual among Ross Chastain and Chase Elliott for the lead. He added that he would have loved to get his No:43 car to a victory lane and hopefully before the playoff.

I would have loved to have run that last lap out. I think Ross (Chastain) and Chase (Elliott) were going to run each other pretty hard in (turns) three and four, and I would have loved to have a chance to make something happen. I feel like we’ve been close at a lot of superspeedways, just haven’t closed one out. I would love to get the No. 43 in victory lane and I hope we can do it before the playoffs,” Erick Jones explained.
