Kyle Larson has been going through a rough patch lately. The Hendrick Motorsports driver did not have the best start to the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season. Larson had two DNFs and two top-ten finishes in the last five races. At the Atlanta Motor Speedway, the 2021 Cup Series champion was in the fight until he was not. Aric Almirola blew a tire, ending right in front of Larson.

The first race that witnessed a non-Chevy team winning the season couldn’t produce the entertainment that the last four races of the season were able to generate. It had minimal action till the third stage, and drivers were racing clean most days, on a track that is supposed to be a short superspeedway. The race came to life in the final stages, and fans saw the impressive last-lap tussle between race winners Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski. The top three finished the race with a 100th-of-a-second difference between them.

Kyle Larson met with the reporters at the Atlanta Cup race after he visited the infield care center. He was frustrated with the race and about how it lacked entertainment. He stated, “It was extremely boring until the third stage, and then, for whatever reason, it seemed like the bottom lane was starting to make headway. I don’t know what changed.”

It is not a good look for the sport when a driver of his stature calls the race “extremely boring”. Though the end of the race was thrilling, the fans agreed with the driver as the first two stages lacked entertainment. NASCAR should look into this situation and do what needs to be done.

Lady luck seems to be completely ignoring the No:5 Chevy team this season. He could have won in Las Vegas and Phoenix as he led the races toward the end. However, he sat back and watched his teammate William Byron take the victory.  He was caught up in a multi-car crash caused by Aric Almirola, which resulted in his first DNF of the year.

Though Larson was the worst-finished HMS driver end of the day, he can console himself with the fact that the whole Chevy garage was struggling to perform when Ford and Toyota thrived. Going into COTA next week, his prime concern will be to secure the all-important win as early as possible.

The HMS driver could have converted his top fives to wins. He was in contention at the Atlanta Motor Speedway as well. But now he is 32nd in the driver’s standings. It is not where he wants to be. William Byron, on the other hand, is 28th in the standings. It is bad timing for Kyle Larson, the HMS drivers were already docked 100 points due to the penalty, and 10 playoff points. They also have the suspensions of the crew chiefs. Larson will hope to make up for his misfortune in the upcoming races.
