Legacy Motor Club has announced that they have signed 2003 NASCAR Cup Series champion Matt Kenseth as the competition advisor. He is set to join the team immediately and will be part of the team’s final four races of the 2023 season, which has been disappointing on and off the track for the LMC.

The Jimmie Johnson and Maury Gallagher-owned team has been making big moves in the 2023 season. The biggest was the decision to end the long-standing partnership with Chevy. LMC will move to Toyota and become the third TRD team from the 2024 season. One of the primary reasons for hiring Kenseth is to make that transition smooth, as he has previously been a driver for TRD at JGR, and his competitive nature was a factor as well.

“Not only is Matt an excellent driver and a fierce competitor, he’s also a great friend. This alliance makes so much sense. Matt is extremely smart, has worked with Toyota while racing for Joe Gibbs Racing, and is still as competitive as ever. He’s a natural-born athlete and as fit as I have ever seen him. I’m so glad he is willing to share his knowledge and experience with us, and we look forward to all Matt has to offer,” Johnson said in an LMC statement.

Having the 39 times Cup race winner in the garage alongside two champion drivers, Jimmie Johnson and Richard Petty will give a massive boost to the LMC line-up to produce more solid performances. His leadership capabilities and connections with JGR will be a big asset as they will speed up their integration into the TRD umbrella and ready them for instant success.

Here is how fans on social media reacted to the announcement

The NASCAR fans on X (previously Twitter) had some positive and strong negative takes on the announcement. Some quickly pointed out that LMC is on the right track to glory and that having a competitive driver like Kenseth on the team will be a huge asset.

At the same time, some fans used the opportunity to give some wild takes on the team’s current status. Some pointed out that Kenseth should be replacing Johnson as the team leader, considering the drop in form since he took over. There was some criticism targeting Kenseth as well.

While few of the criticisms are genuine, the most negative ones are the by-product of tribalistic fan culture in NASCAR. Toyota, being one of the most hated manufacturers due to many reasons, along with the rumored drama at LMC among  Petty and Johnson, might’ve contributed to this.
