Chase Elliott’s 2023 season has been defined by struggles, and it doesn’t seem to end any time soon. The No:9 Chevy Camaro ZL1 driver, the favorite to win the 2023 owners Championship, crashed out during the practice due to a right-rear tire failure. Due to the significant damage it caused, HMS was forced to take the backup car; hence, he will start Sunday’s race in the rear.

With just 15 laps into the practice in the first race of the playoff Round of 8, he spun and crashed into the wall. His crash had more to do with a right rear tire failure. The Goodyear tires that were distributed to the teams for the race seem to be having some reliability issues. Daniel Suarez of Trackhouse Racing also crashed out, while  HMS’s Kyle Larson also had major tire damage after practice.

It might negatively affect Elliott’s efforts to give Hendrick the big payday by winning the owner’s title, and he admitted that it’s a bummer. Elliott said, as reported by ProTalk, “Just cut a right rear tire I’m not sure why. I ran 15 or so laps so maybe I ran too long, I’m not sure. It’s a bummer I thought uh, I knew it was a tire for sure I just couldn’t get stopped enough to keep it out of the wall, unfortunately. Yeah, it’s definitely a bummer, but it’s kind of been that way all year.”

Rick Hendrick’s driver missed out on the playoff for the first time this year. He failed to secure a single win or enough points to progress to the playoff. The major reason for his failure was his snowboarding injury that made him sit out six races and a one-race suspension he received from NASCAR for wrecking Denny Hamlin.

Here is how fans reacted to Chase Elliott’s crash

Fans on X had a mixed set of reactions to the HMS driver’s spin. Some were quick to blame the tires, rightly so, as the crash might have hindered his owner’s title chances. They pointed out that tire damage can cause trouble for drivers in the main race.

Some fans used the opportunity to mock the Chevy drivers and the poor season he is having with HMS. They believe the Vegas crash is just another chapter of the poor 2023 season he had behind the wheel.
