Ross Chastain and Kyle Larson crash at Darlington

The Darlington throwback weekend Cup race witnessed yet another race that ended with Ross Chastain taking a flight back to Florida in the Villian pedestal. The Trackhouse Racing driver was involved in a lead-lap crash with 2021 Cup champion Kyle Larson. The incident gave the eventual race winner William Byron the lead and the advantage he needed to secure a third race win in 2023.

Chastain and Kyle Larson fought head-to-head in a restart in the third stage. The No:1 Chevy Camaro ZL1 on the inside tried to squeeze and stop the No:5 Chevy from taking the lead. The aggressive move ended in Chastain’s car getting lost after contact with Larson’s. He then turned to the outside across the nose of the HMS car.

Larson pushed him forward for some time before eventually getting away from him. But the damage was done, as Larson’s car, capable of winning, had severe damage. He finished the race at p20. Chastain, who hit on the wall, had to retire and settle for a P29. Chastain later admitted that it was his fault and that he wrecked himself, while Larson refused to give any statements.

“Full commitment into (Turn) 1, and I got really tight and drove up and turned myself. I wanted to squeeze him. I wanted to push him up. We had been trading back and forth all day, and I wanted to push him up for sure but definitely didn’t want to turn myself into the wall,” Ross Chastain said.

HMS owner Rick Hendrick was also frustrated by Chastain, who previously insinuated two crashes involving Larson this season. He said after the race, “I think you can ask any driver in here that he’s wrecked or been involved with him, he doesn’t have to be that aggressive. I guess at this point in the race, maybe you’re super-aggressive but don’t run people up into the fence,”.

NASCAR fans on Twitter had a mixed reaction to the incident as they debated if it was Chastain who was to blame for the incident. Some pointed out that it was a racing incident as both fought hard. Few fans were convinced that it was the Trackhouse driver’s fault. They demand that NASCAR and Chevy step in and stop the aggressive behavior.
