Hershel McGriff, alongside Red Framer, are two motorsports legends who proved age is never a barrier to full fill ones craving for the adrenalin rush while defying gravity on the track. One of the complete drivers in terms of the number of disciplines he has raced for McGriff was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame alongside Matt Kenseth and Kirk Shelmerdine.

In 2018 Hershel McGriff made history by driving in the ARCA series at the age of 90; the same man raced in 1945 Sothern 500, just two weeks after World War II. He drove in the Cup series, In the LeMan’s, and the various Motorcycle races. He was the 1986 NASCAR Winston west series champion and has potentially raced with or against all NASCAR HOFs. Richard Petty said, “He’s raced against or driven for just about everybody already in the Hall of Fame,”.

McGriff has no plan to stop racing. Instead, he is getting ready to reach the magic number 100 and race again. He said, “Well, it’s kind of a joke, but it is gonna get serious…I’m not worried about me making it to 100. I’m pretty sure I will. … I only have five years to go, and I’ll be back in it. I’ll have to get in shape a little bit more,”.

McGriff said, “Bill McAnally and Richard Childress both offered me a car for a race when I reached the magic number of 100,”. He also joked that he hopes the ones who offered him the ride remain healthy to keep the promises “I hope they both stay healthy,”.

McGriff played a significant role in NASCAR’s growth into what it is now. He was one of Big Bill’s closest associates and a renowned public relation specialist as he drove around the country to advertise NASCAR races.

McGriff and France Sr. met for the first time in 1950 in Mexico, where the NASCAR founder was defeated by then 22 years old McGriff in a cross-country race. They became friends that day and later worked together to develop the sports they love while pursuing racing glory.

I flew with Bill a lot in his plane and did public relations for him. He’d drop me off whenever they had a race coming up, and I’d go by a few television and radio stations and do advertising for the race. After the race, we’d fly back,” McGriff said.
