“I don’t think so,” Denny Hamlin refutes the possibility of Tyler Reddick joining 23X1 Racing before 2024
Denny Hamlin and Tyler Reddick
23X1 Racing and Tyler Reddick raised some eyebrows in the NASCAR community mid-way to the 2022 season when it was announced that the youngster and Michael Jordon and Denny Hamlin-owned team has reached an agreement with the RCR driver that will see him race for Toyota in the future.
The driver and the team agreed on a deal that will see Tyler Reddick making a permanent move to 23X1 in 2024 after his current contract with Richard Childress Racing runs out around that time. But with the Kurt Busch, retirement scare following his Pocono crash runners has been around predicting an early move from the youngster.
But now the team co-owner and No:11 Joe Gibbs Racing Camry driver Deny Hamlin has come forth denying the team plans to replace Bubba Wallace’s teammate in such a manner. Hamlin revealed the matter in his media availability pre-Kansas qualifying on Saturday.
Find out what Denny Hamlin said
Denny Hamlin when asked about whether the 23X1 Racing team has plans to get Tyler Reddick to the team before 2014 acknowledged that it won’t happen as the latter wants to race for RCR until his contracted time ends. He added that even if Kurt Busch decided to retire Reddick is not yet part of their top replacement plans.
“I don’t think so. I think Tyler (Reddick) would like to play out his contract at RCR and that’s what he’s always intended. We’ve not planned for anything otherwise. Kurt’s (Busch) going to drive the 45 as far as we understand and unless he says differently and if he does say differently, then we have a couple of options that we’re looking at. But we never intended on getting Tyler before 2024,” Denny Hamlin said.
Denny Hamlin when asked about Kurt Busch’s substitute Ty Gibbs’s performance so far this season acknowledged that the JGR Xfinity driver has done well so far as he followed what they told him to do. He added that Ty Gibbs getting the car to p20 without tearing it apart with such a huge performance gap exiting between the cup and Xfinity series is a big thing.
“He’s been good, he’s done what we’ve asked him to do. It’s a learning process and he’s still 19. He’s still learning as he goes. Certainly, he realizes the fence between the Cup garage and the Xfinity garage is a very tall one and these guys are really, really good. He’s learning and he’s not tearing up equipment. He’s getting us in the top-20 so it’s good,” says Denny Hamlin.
