“I hate that I took the best car here and I tore it up a couple of times” Ross Chastain on his aggressive Atlanta run

Ross Chastain's No:1 car after Atlanta Cup Race

At the Atlanta Motor Speedway, Chase Elliott, a hometown favorite driving the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy Camaro ZL1, won the 19th race in the NASCAR Cup Series, in 2022. This victory extend Elliott’s championship lead over Ross Chastain, who finished second. The superspeedway race on the intermediate track was stopped under the yellow flag when Corey LaJoie crashed into the wall while racing with Elliott in the last lap.

The No:1 Trackhouse Racing Chevy Camaro ZL1 driver Ross Chastain had yet another aggressive run at Atlanta, as just like his early-season outing at the track he finished  P2 at the checkered flag. Chastain has made a number of enemies in the track in his to P2 in his heat-up car along with reigniting some old feuds. The championship contender caused two of the major crashes on the field where in the first one he spun Martin Truex Jr. causing a nine-car pile-up which eventually ended RCR driver Austin Dillon’s race day.

He later in the race reignited his feud with Denny Hamlin, which was started in Gateway, after he went into the left rear of Denny Hamlin at turns 3 and 4which obviously didn’t sit well with the veteran as he later commented that “Everyone has their different tolerance levels, certainly … I’ve reached my peak…It all works itself out in the end,”.

Talking about his P2 finish in the race Ross Chastain acknowledged that he hate the fact that he had the best car in the field with him, something he s proud of his team for providing, and stored it up more than just once. He added that his team was able to do some awesome repair works that enabled him to fight Chase Elliott at the end just before the caution came out.

“I hate that I took the best car here and I tore it up a couple of times. Hats off to Chevrolet and Trackhouse Racing for bringing this fast of a Jockey Chevrolet. Our road crew and our pit crew did an awesome job to rebound through all of the damage repairs. We had a shot and I got inside of the No. 9 (Chase Elliott) coming off of (turn) two coming to the checkered and the caution came out. I hope everyone is alright back there,”  Ross Chastain said.

He pointed out that Corey LaJoie, with his No:7 Spire Motorsports car, did an awesome job and added that he really thought that entering turn 1 on the final lap he was really going to push LaJoie to the win. He added that though they all just fought for the top they almost gave it to him in the end.

Awesome job to Corey LaJoie and Spire Motorsports. I really thought into (turn) one when we took the white that I was going to push him to the win. They all just fought for the top and almost gave it to us,” Ross Chastain added.

He went on to say that he chose to stay behind LaJoie in the restart though he had the option to start up front as he was worried about the fuel which he wish he wouldn’t have done that way. As he should have just taken the front raw and gone for the win instead of worrying about being at the offensive end towards the final part of the race.

We had the option to take the front row. We were second and I chose behind him (Corey LaJoie) because we were worried about fuel. I knew better. I should have just taken the front row and dealt with the fuel. We were trying to make sure we were on offense at the end of the day for our Jockey Chevrolet,” says Ross Chastain.
