Kyle Larson wins at Watkins Glen

Reigning cup series champion Kyle Larson has secured his second win of the season at Watkins Glen International as the No:5 Camaro Zl1 driver took home his second win of the season and consecutive win at the track holding of AJ Allmendinger. Kyle Larson’s win was surprisingly a repetition of what went down for him on Saturday in the Xfinity series which he also won with his last-minute heroics.

Larson secured the race lead in the final resort where he stared on the inside of teammate Chase Elliott, who has been dominating the race after starting on the pole.  The defending champion bumped the No:9 car in the sweeping corner, which also prompted Elliott to lose a couple more of the positions to AJ Allmendinger and Joey Logano.

Kyle Larson finished 0.882s ahead of the No:16 Koulig Racing Chevy to secure his first win of the season after the Fontana Race win that he secured on the second race week of the season. The No:5 car proved too much for Road Course specialist Allmendinger and Penske Veteran Logano to overtake as they settled for P2 and P3 places respectively.

Daniel Suarez finished P5 in the race becoming the fastest Trackhouse Racing car, while his teammate and PROJECT91 contender Kimi Raikkonen was forced out of the race after a wreck in stage two. Christopher Bell, who finished P8 is the only Toyota extra in the top 10 on Watkins Glen.

Find out what Kyle Larson had to say about his win

Kyle Larson acknowledged that he isn’t that proud of the way his win came as the only opportunity he got to take the lead away from his teammate Chase Elliott was the lane-choosing mistake from the 2020 cup champion. He pointed out that it was a risky move from the No:9 that late in a race.

That was really my only opportunity [to go for the lead]. I’m not proud of it. But being in the inside lane — the right lane — being the leader, choosing the left lane — it definitely wins out. When it gets late in the race, it’s definitely risky,” Kyle Larson said.

Kyle Larson went on to say that he knew the report was the only opportunity he had to get by his teammate though they had pretty equal cars. He added that he had fun in the final green flag chase of the No:9 car for the lead and though he burned out some stuff to secure the lead on the restart it was enough to win, which he is proud of for the team.

“I knew that was my only opportunity to get by him. I feel like our cars were pretty equal today. Had a lot of fun after the late green flag cycle trying to chase him down. Kind of burned my stuff up a little bit, but the restarts kept me in it and kept our team in it. I’m proud of my guys,” Kyle Larson added.

Kyle Larson acknowledged that he is happy to secure yet another win at the track and get some bonus points, which he has been missing out on this season before the playoff starts saying “Good to get another win here at Watkins Glen and get some more bonus points going into the Playoffs. We haven’t had a lot here this year,’’.

Kyle Larson pointed out that he isn’t proud of the way the win came to him though he did what he had to do to get a win “I’m not proud of it but I did what I felt like I had to do to get the win,”.
