It is well-known that the 2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick is retiring at the end of the season. The three-time Brickyard 200 winner ran his final race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Sunday’s race was emotional for various reasons, from Michael McDowell winning his second Cup victory to Chase Elliott failing to secure the playoff spot despite a solid performance.
However, the most significant reason for the fans is that the race marked the end of an era as Kevin Harvick made his final start on the track. Right before the Brickyard 200, the NASCAR legend received the highest honor from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Douglas Boles. He presented Harvick with a bronze brick to celebrate him and his three epic victories on the track. It was also to pay tribute to Harvick’s accomplishments in NASCAR.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway shared an image of Kevin Harvick holding the bronze brick on social media. They tweeted, “Something he’ll remember forever. To celebrate the retirement of three-time Brickyard 400 winner Kevin Harvick, J. Douglas Boles presented him with a bronze brick in honor of the impact he’s made on the Racing Capital of the World.” It was a wholesome tribute to the Daytona 500 winner.
Kevin Harvick is 6th in the 2023 Cup standings after Indy
Harvick conquered Brickyard thrice. While he aimed for his fourth victory on the track, things did not go as expected. The 47-year-old entered the IMS road course race winless and hoped to secure a win and earn a playoff spot. However, he finished 23rd and could not make the playoffs this season. Kevin Harvick is 6th in the overall NASCAR 2023 Cup standings. Though this year hasn’t been the best of his career, NASCAR fans will forever remember and cherish his 23-year-long Cup career.
Kevin Harvick’s first victory in Brickyard came in 2003, it was only his third attempt, and he excelled on the track. He had to replace Dale Earnhardt Sr after his tragic death during the 2001 Daytona 500 race. And from then until now, Harvick has made his mark in NASCAR. He competed in 803 Cup races and has 60 wins. The West Coast Stock Car Hall of Famer has 439 top-ten finishes in his Cup career.
Kevin Harvick entered his final Brickyard race driving a special paint scheme. It resembled Tony Stewart’s 2016 car during his final Indy start. Harvick’s impact on the sport is not confined to his IMS wins alone, as he even won the Kroger 200 twice. The 47-year-old will continue contributing to NASCAR as a broadcaster after his retirement. He will join Fox Sports after this season. However, there is no doubt the fans will miss watching him race.
