Martin Truex Jr. and Ross Chastain

Martin Truex Jr. the 2017 Cup series champion has been a consistent performer in his No:19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry in the 2022 season, though is yet to secure his first win in the Next-Gen car the veteran ranks P7 in the Championship table with only 2 points below Ross Chastain who has already secured two wins in this season.

The Trackhouse Racing No:1 Chevrolet Camaro ZLI driver came under scrutiny for his antics against Martin Truex Jr. at Dover Motor speedway where a battle for P3 between him and the JGR driver caused a last-lap skirmish resulting in the veteran’s crash and a post-race altercation. Ross Chastain drifted into Martin Truex Jr. in the final lap of the race causing a crash that saw Chastain taking home P3 and Truex Jr. relegated to P12.

Martin Truex Jr. explained the incident between him and Ross Chastain in Dover saying Ross Chastain came up to him after his spotter indicated the No:19 car was there following which caused him to lift and crash. He went on to say Ross Chastain ran him all over the race track air-blocking forgetting about setting his best lap times.

“Well, he came up. I mean, I had a run to the outside, and he, his spotter told him I was there, and he just came up like I wasn’t there. So, it caused me to lift and get in the marbles, ultimately crashing and losing six spots, seven, and eight spots. So, I don’t really know the reason. He ran me all over the race track all day, and I get it. He’s air-blocking. These cars are terrible in dirty air, he’s doing what he has to do, but I’m talking three lanes up the race track, all over. Like literally, just completely blowing and forgetting about making lap time,” Martin Truex Jr. said.

He went on to say he is mad at Ross Chastain due to the crash he caused and not about him screwing around for fourth place which weird considering they are in Cup Series. Martin Truex Jr. reiterated that he is mad at the No:1 car for blatantly running him out of the race track and added that he doesn’t expect such things to happen again.

The guys in front of us are driving away, and he’s screwing around with me for fourth place. It’s the Cup Series, we don’t typically race like that. I just thought it was kind of uncalled for. And then obviously, the incident I was mad about – I wasn’t mad about the rest of it, which is ridiculous, but it is what it is, some guys will do it. And then the deal at the end of the race, just blatantly running me out of race track, that was what I was mad about,” Martin Truex Jr. added.

I asked him why he did it, and I’m not really sure he knows why he did it. But it’s not going to happen again,” says Martin Truex Jr.
