The fourth NASCAR Cup race of the 2024 season at Phoniex was a mixed event, with long green flag runs in the first two stages before a chaotic start to stage 3. Things settled after a few incidents at the start of the final stage and Christopher Bell marked Toyota’s first win of the season. At the same time another Toyota driver, Erik Jones marked the start of a new beef.
After the race, he publically called out Chase Briscoe of Stewart Haas Racing for the way the No:14 car raced him and how it resulted in his wreck. Jones, who drives for Jimmie Johnson‘s LMC started the day strong till the final stage. In stage 3, on a restart, Jones found himself in a four-wide battle after he was slowed down by the SHR driver.
Jones who was already in an unfavorable spot due to a poor pit-stop, and the damage he suffered due to the crash ended his hopes for a solid race. The LMC driver after the race didn’t mince his words on Briscoe and pointed out that the SHR driver had been racing him the same way for a long time and added that he would have a conversation with Tony Stewart‘s driver.
The 14 [Chase Briscoe] was dragging us down over and over, restart after restart and he put us four wide because he was slowing us down so much. I got wrecked, so that sucks, but he seems to have an issue with me every week. So, I’ll call him this week, he probably won’t call me back and I’d love to talk to him.Jones told Frontstreatch.
Chase Briscoe responded to Erik Jones’ comments
Briscoe after the race was asked to give his opinion about the comments from the Legacy MC driver. He pointed out that he is open to having a conversation with him about this, but admitted that he is unsure why Jones is mad at him or what he did wrong in the four-wide situation.
I don’t know what I did, I know we were four wide at one point, I got super tight and got into him I think but I don’t know if that’s the part he’s mad about or what. If he calls me I’ll gladly answer, I’ve never really talked to Erik before I don’t have a problem with him at all.Briscoe said.
The SHR driver went on to confirm the fact that he and Jones often race each other hard. This sis because of the fact that they seldom fight for the same positions. Briscoe added that he will be a little more aggressive than usual in the 2024 season.
