Joe Gibbs Racing’s owner and former three-time Superbowl-winning coach, Joe Gibbs, has admitted the Miami Cup race drama involving his team showcases how dramatic NASCAR is. JGR’s Christopher Bell won the race, while his veteran teammate and championship chasers Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin were forced to retire.
JGR had the most drivers in the R-8 of any team, with three coming into the penultimate playoff round. There of their drivers were expected to make it to the championship-4. But after the first two races at Vegas and now Miami, two TRD drivers making it the last race seems to be a long shot. Going into the final race at Martinsville, one of the two will get eliminated, if not the two.
Speaking about the contrasting emotions at the JGR garage, where the veterans, who were dominating coming to the playoffs, are scratching their heads when the youngster is enjoying his clutch win. Gibbs pointed out that this vast different emotion on the same day, even within the same team, is the reason the fans love the sports. He sees it as a real-life reality show.

It’s just amazing sometimes what can happen in this sport…. It shows you what can happen in sports. It’s the greatest reality show in the world because we don’t know. I think, as fans, that’s why we all like it. We don’t know. So just thrilled to be a part of it. God has blessed us with a lot of great people really.Joe Gibbs said, as reported by Pro Talk.
Joe Gibbs feels there is still a chance to make it to the final four for Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr.
The Hall of Famer boss of JGR isn’t ready to give up, as he believes the No:19 and No:11 Toyota Camry teams still have a shot at making it. Like last season, he expects a classic race at Martinsville and hopes that Bell isn’t their only driver in the final four. Yet again, Martinsville will be an unmissable race for fans, as six drivers will go all out for the win.
I think it’s hard to get in the Final 4. I’ll tell you that. I don’t think anything’s a given…I think you’re looking at it, and the great thing is we have three cars for our team that have a chance. We still got a chance. That’s the way we look at it. I think we’re going to Martinsville, it’s going to be a classic, I’m sure. But we do have a chance. We go there with both Denny and Martin…
The major issue Hamlin and Truex Jr. will face is the lack of momentum. Hamlin, who was the most consistent driver in R-16 and R-12, has been poor in the last two races. Truex Jr. had the best finish of P17 In the first two playoff rounds, and though he showed some progress in Vegas, it isn’t enough. JGR still can bank on them despite poor momentum, as both are proven winners.
