Defending Cup Series champion Joey Logano failed to catch up with Joe Gibbs Racing driver Martin Truex Jr. at New Hampshire and missed the opportunity to secure his second win of the 2023 season. The 2017 Cup champion dominated the proceedings at the track and secured his maiden Cup race win there, while for hometown hero Logano, it ended in a disappointing P2.

Joey Logano had one of the fastest Ford Mustangs of the day and was a contender from lap one, starting the race at P4. He had an average running position of 5.4 the whole race and finished in the top 10 on both stages, which was won by his JGR counterpart. The two times Cup champion had the opportunity to take the lead twice in the last 25 laps in restarts but failed to capitalize on it against a determined Truex Jr.

Logano, while talking about the media after the Crayon 301, admitted that he feels mad right now as his run went in P2 before in his home track. He claimed that finishing second in the home track hurts more than the same happening someplace else. The Team Penske Racing driver added that it was a good day though the finish stings.

It’s just when you’re at your home racetrack, second hurts; more than anywhere else. There is no place where I want to win more than here, and I came up one spot short. That one stings, but overall, I guess you still have to say it was a good day. Just mad right now,” Logano told the media after the race.

While talking about Truex Jr.’s dominant run for his former team, Logano admitted that the No:19 Camary was so fast he didn’t have enough in the No:22 Mustang to beat him. He added that he did have some opportunities to take the lead, which could have helped him to win, but it was just a big if.

I needed to go back to the store to get more tools. Not enough of them to beat the No. 19. They were fast. Gosh, I thought I had a shot to beat him right before the first caution after we put tires on – so two cautions to the end. I had a chance to roll to his outside there right before the caution came out,” Logano said.

That would have been my chance – if I got in front of him, I think I had him beat. But you have to get in front of him. He just seemed to refire better the next two runs. He didn’t refire on new tires that well, but the next two, he refired pretty quickly,” Logano added.

Logano has been the most consistent Mustang driver in the 2023 season, and he scored the manufactures first win of the year. From the 20 starts, he has scored eight top-10 finishes that include five podium finishes. He scored top 10 in three of the last five races and had no finish outside the top 20.
