The iconic Chicago city is not new to traffic jams, but the traffic during NASCAR’s inaugural Street race might have been the most peculiar one. On lap 49, there was a pileup as the cars turned from Michigan Avenue onto Jackson Drive in turn 11. The No.24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 driver William Byron bumped the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford of Kevin Harvick. This caused the latter to spin and go sideways on turn 11.
Due to this incident, Kevin Harvick blocked half the road and caused a multi-car pileup at NASCAR’s first-ever Street race in Chicago. Thankfully, the cars were able to straighten out and continue the race. This quickly became one of the incidents that will go down in NASCAR’s history. The fans linked it to the “Hail Melon,” a spectacular moment in NASCAR.
Last fall, Ross Chastain made a move that was the talk of the town. He smashed into the wall to gain speed and move past his rivals at Martinsville Speedway. It was an epic move that pushed him into NASCAR’s title-deciding race. This video game move by Chastain was termed“Hail Melon.” Though he received praise for his gutsy move, it is now banned in NASCAR. Fans have concluded that this traffic at the Chicago Street race is the new “Hail Melon moment.”
Here is how the fans reacted to the traffic during the Chicago Street race
NASCAR fans called the incident the “funniest moment all year.” They were amused by what had happened and said, “This had me rolling,” “This is hilarious, thank you.” The fans deemed it the “Moment of the year.” They had the best reaction and called it “midtown madness.” However, some fans were annoyed, as one user demanded, “Nascar go back to racing on a track” and said, “This race sucks.”
Some fans from the city hilariously stated, “Finally, these guys are experiencing what it is REALLY like to drive in Chicago.” “One of the many reasons I’m not a fan of Chicago. The traffic is consistently terrible,” and “make all 36 races on the streets of Chicago immediately, this is peak comedy” were two of the many comments. Take a look at more below.
Most fans agreed that the result looked like a Chicago traffic jam. Kevin Harvick finished 29th after starting 35th on the grid. William Byron also made up places and finished 13th. Meanwhile, the driver who stole the show was Shane van Gisbergen, the Australian Supercars legend. He won his first-ever NASCAR Cup Series start. It is safe to say the Chicago Street race was packed with action!
