Stewart Haas Racing No:14 Ford Mustang team of Chase Briscoe was hit with a historic L3 level penalty for counterfeiting. The team and driver lost 120 championship points alongside hefty fines, chief crew suspension, and playoff points deduction. The penalty amidst SHR’s poor form has damaged the young driver’s playoff hopes.

Two times NASCAR Cup series champion Kyle Busch ahead of the Sonoma Cup race, pointed out that the penalty was due to poor management from the Ford giants; he suggested the team should have sought help from other NASCAR teams for the part instead of custom-building a new one and said the no:14 team deserves the “what an idiot award”.

I wish we had a what an idiot award. Jesus. Even if you can’t find that part, you know you can call one of the other race teams and say, ‘Hey you guys got this, we can buy it from you.’ That blows my mind. I don’t get it. For as little as that probably meant, that was a huge fine to the pocketbook and points book,” Kyle Busch said.

The Richard Childress Racing driver is right to call out the Tony Stewart co-owned team as they should have been cautious about NASCAR’s tightened scrutiny of single vendor-supplied parts. The 2023 season so far has seen multiple hefty fines being imposed on teams. The garage’s top and most influential team, Hendrick Motorsports, wasn’t even spared from the strict regulations.

NASCAR long has a culture that justifies cheating till it gets caught. Busch believes that the winningest driver in the sport is 15 out of the 14 teams, if chosen randomly, won’t pass the shakedown in the NASCAR R&D center. He also appreciated NASCAR for exhibiting the part SHR modified.

So anyways yeah, I think it’s kind of cool that they show all that stuff and show exactly what’s going on and what guys are doing. And so I mean, what’s crazy about it though is all the penalties that have come out of the tech center I guarantee you can take 15 of them after every single race, and there would be something wrong with 14 of them. So, it’s all the tricks and what you’re trying to do and what you can get away with all the time,” Kyle Busch said.
