It wasn’t a fun night for playoff drivers Sunday at Darlington, and with just 37 laps left in the race, fans witnessed a wreck that ended the race for three drivers. Joe Gibbs Racings’ Denny Hamlin, his teammate Christopher Bell, and Frontraw Motorsports’ Michael McDowell were the drivers involved in the incident.

Kyle Busch was in a three-way battle with Todd Gilliland and his teammate Austin Dillon. The No:8 Chevy was on the inside, made a move on the No:38, and sent him lose. He made contact with the No:3 Chevy on the outside and then spun in the middle of the track. Hamlin, coming in hot, took evasive action and moved to the outside lane to avoid a crash.

The No:11 Camry’s move backfired as McDowell made contact with his rear. This ended in both drivers suffering heavy damage to their cars and the No:34 eventually retiring. Bell, who was driving behind McDowell, was collected in the incident as well and, fortunately, was able to escape without any major damage.

For the JGR duo, it was the perfect depiction of the bad luck they had in the whole race. They started the day as contenders, and Hamlin dominated the first two stages. But a lose tire took him out of contention, and Bell suffered a similar fate. If not for the incident, Hamlin would have fought race-winner Kyle Larson alongside Tyler Reddick in the final laps.
