Two times NASCAR Cup series champion Kyle Busch is among the front runners to make it to the championship four at Phoenix Raceway. He is determined to secure his third title dethroning former teammate and rival Joey Logano with his new team Richard Childress Racing.

This season, Busch and RCR’s Achilles’ heel has been the poor performance on short tracks. The team failed to get the best out of their Chevy till this Sunday at Richmond. Busch was able to start the race on P2 and went on finish P3, behind race winner Chirs Buescher and runner-up Denny Hamlin.

After the race, he pointed out that they could finally get the best out of their short-track package despite the struggles. He said the top 5 finish might be their baseline in coming short-track races in Martinsville and Phoenix. Both are playoff races, with the latter being the season finale. Kyle Busch added that he needs to get into the last four anyway.

I would like to think so, I’m not sure. With only Martinsville and Phoenix kind of left, I think this was a good baseline for Phoenix. A lot of guys have always talked about if you run good at Phoenix, you run good here (and) vice versa. So, maybe that’ll help us. But we’ve got to be in the final four before we get there,” Busch is quoted by the RACER.

Busch went on to point out that he is proud of the efforts but added that he still feels there was a probability that they could do little but more. He added that P3 was the best that his team would have pulled up anyway, despite him being able to close the gap a bit on the final laps.

Proud of the effort. Proud of the reset there on the short track stuff that was a good race for us. I love coming to Richmond, obviously, and wish we had a little bit more there. We were inching up on them there that last run just a little bit, but I don’t know if we would have got there. Third was about what we were going to get,” Busch said.

Busch was able to end his streak of back-to-back poor finishes. He finished outside the previous two races. Before, Busch had impressive top-10 runs for seven straight races. He scored one win and three top 5s during the run. He hopes to build on the momentum and finish the regular season on a high.
