In this intense race for glory, racing legend Kyle Petty has made a bold declaration, putting his money on Martin Truex Jr. as the favorite to clinch the Cup.
Truex recently signed a contract extension with Joe Gibbs Racing, signaling his commitment to achieving the ultimate goal of becoming a NASCAR champion once again. With the title race in full swing, the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion aimed to retire as a champion. His performances this season have solidified his status as a primary championship contender.
Speaking in NBC’s NASCAR podcast, Kyle Petty stated the side he is picking for the 2023 battle, “Even though that William (Byron) has five wins, the only driver that I’ve really seen take this year and grab it and say ‘come get it from me’, is Martin Truex.” He added that “Martin has been the guy that I believe is the most consistent and has been there, and so I think you kind of got to go through Martin Truex if they can stay hot.”
According to Petty, “Other than that[Martin Truex Jr.] I’m not seeing anybody who’s that strong.” While William Byron’s 2023 season has been a triumph of skill and strategy, with five victories and a commanding points lead, Truex’s consistency and determination have been exceptional. Both drivers have the same points, but Byron leads the standings on countback due to his two additional race victories. This sets the stage for a thrilling battle between two deserving contenders.
