Legendary NASCAR crew chief and Fox Sports analyst Larry McReynolds has pin-pointed Stewart Haas Racing’s No:14 team as the most underperforming Ford side in the series. He is disappointed by the poor result from Chase Briscoe in the 2023 season and is also frustrated by the fact that they invited a penalty for counterfeiting parts.
Chase Briscoe was seen as the next Tony Stewart and the replacement of Kevin Harvick as the team’s leading driver once he retired. But he hasn’t come close to replicating the impressive 2022 season he had. Other than Harvick, all three drivers of SHR need to win a race to secure playoffs, and Briscoe doesn’t just need to secure one win but needs a few more if he wants a deep playoff run due to the point penalty he received for counterfeiting.
Fox pundit Larry McReynolds has given his take on SHR struggles during his recent appearance on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. He pointed out that if he were in the position of team owner Gene Haas, he would be livid due to the lack of success from the team, especially the No:14. He pointed out that the counterfeiting penalty that came in a race they finished P20 would have made Haas more frustrated.
“The only one to me that is just not good was counterfeiting a part that happened over there that 14 team at Stewart-Haas Racing. Because I said it, if I’m Gene Haas, I gotta pay how much money for something we made that we finished 20th with,” McReynolds said.
“We didn’t win the race. We didn’t even get a top 10. We barely finished in the top 20…But to know that they absolutely was a non-factor, not even on the radar. And to know that’s where I say, if I’m Gene Haas, I got steam coming out my ears and my nostrils,” McReynolds added.

SHR replaces Chase Briscoe’s crew chief in hopes of changes

Tony Stewart’s team has decided to reunite Briscoe with his former Xfinity Series crew chief Richard Boswell. Briscoe won eight Xfinity Series races with Boswell as his crew chief before making his Cup debut. He was promoted to the Cup series while working as the crew chief of Riley Herbst in the second tier.
Briscoe’s current crew chief John Klausmeier, who was suspended for the counterfeiting incident by NASCAR, is shifted to SHR’s vehicle performance group. Aric Almirola’s engineer Davin Restivo will be the new crew chief of Riley Herbst.
“We made these changes in the best interests of the entire organization. Different people in new positions brings new perspectives. There’s still a lot of racing left to do this year, which means there’s still a lot of opportunity. We need to seize these opportunities and make the most of them,” said Greg Zipadelli, SHR’s chief competition officer, about the change.
