“Our build process was not properly vetted” Joe Gibbs Racing apologizes for the Infraction that led to the DQ of Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch as the team declined to appeal

Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch

After being denied his third victory of the year at Pocono and his JGR teammate Kyle Busch’s P2 finish, Denny Hamlin and the whole Joe Gibbs Racing garage were left in total disgust. Unauthorized materials were discovered in the front facia of the veteran team’s No. 18 and No. 11 Toyota Camrys, disqualifying Bush and Hamlin.

The race win instead was awarded to the third-place finisher Chase Eliot of HMS while Tyler Reddick took home the P2 ahead of Daniel Suarez at P3. Though JGR initially acknowledged their intentions to file an appeal against the disqualification, which has some huge precautions with the playoff being this close, they have now reverted their stands and choose not to do so.

The decision came after the internal review the team conducted in the No:11 and No:18 teams in which they found out that the NASCAR findings were in fact true and the disqualification was surly in line with NASCAR rules. Following this, the team has put out a public statement apologizing for their conduct and their decision to not appeal against the ruling.

Wally Brown, the director of competition at Joe Gibbs Racing, released a statement regarding the situation and acknowledged that a single clear piece of tape was discovered positioned over each of the lower corners of the front fascia ahead of the left and right opening of both No:11 and No:18 car and that’s what lead to the DQ of the team in post-race inspection.

In our review of the post-race infractions on the 11 and 18 cars at Pocono, it was discovered that a single piece of clear tape was positioned over each of the lower corners of the front fascia ahead of the left-front and right-front wheel openings on both those cars,” Wally Brown said.

The Joe Gibbs Racing official went on to say that the added pieces were two inches wide and five and a half inches long as the wrap had 0.012 inches thickness. He points out that the change in their build was not properly scrutinized within their organization and recognizes the fact that it is against the NASCAR rules. He went on to apologize on behalf of JGR for the infraction and assured fans that it won’t happen again.

The added pieces were two inches wide and five-and-a-half inches long with a thickness of 0.012 inches and installed under the wrap. This change in our build process was not properly vetted within our organization, and we recognize it is against NASCAR’s rules. We apologize to everyone for this mistake, and we have made changes to our processes to ensure that it does not happen again,” Wally Brown added.
