Kyle Busch left Joe Gibbs Racing ending a 15-year-long partnership during the 2022 playoffs. The veteran wasn’t expected to perform at his best in the early half of 2023. But, Busch is the winningest NASCAR driver for a reason. It took just two official races for the two times Cup champion to score his maiden RCR win.
The No:8 Chevy Camaro ZL1 driver, who missed out on wins in the LA Clash and Daytona 500 by a few seconds, won his third try at Fontana. He scored the final win of Auto Club Speedway, as it will be reconfigured to a short track soon. The milestone win proved that RCR owner Richard Childress signed the veteran with a perfect plan. He believes that Busch can get them back to the elite tier.
Talking about Busch in his latest SiriusXM NASCAR Radio appearance, the Hall of Famer pointed out that the veteran driver is a unique personality with a strong passion for winning races. He added that the Pala Casino 400 win had taken a lot of pressure off their shoulders.
“We’ve got to spend some time with him, and he’s really a unique person, and I’ll tell you, his passion is built so strong to drive a race car and to win, it just flows all the way through this operation. We’ve been right there, and to be able to come and win the next race with Kyle, man, it just took a load off of all of us,” Childress said.
The RCR owner went on to say that the only constraining Busch from winning multiple races in 2023 will be the team’s failure in execution. He said, “We know he can win. We know we got the right stuff, the right people, we just have to execute. If we can execute, he will win a lot of races,”.

Richard Childress opens up about Kyle Busch’s knowledge of tracks
Many NASCAR legends and champions have driven for RCR in the past, and Busch is the latest addition to that list. While discussing the veteran track knowledge, Childress pointed out that he has yet to see many drivers with extensive ideas about the track conditions and what will work best for the team.
“He’s amazing. He’s an amazing human being. After spending time and talking with him, he knows a race car as well as most drivers. Better than most drivers I’ve ever had. He’s really helping the whole operation. He’ll help Austin a whole lot,” says Childress
“He’s just a very unique person, and even for me, I didn’t realize that he knew as much about a race car as he did. But I’m telling you, he is up on it. And the tracks. He can read a track like no other driver I’ve ever been around. Dale [Earnhardt] could read the air. He can read these racetracks, and he knows what he’s wanting,” Childress added.
