The Petty family’s NASCAR legacy is unmatched. The family has given the sport one of its GOATs Richard Petty, the 7 times cup champion. The King is arguably one of the first NASCAR racing superstars and has secured 200 cup race win in his long career.
The Petty GMS Racing, which was the Petty Enterprises in the past, has also facilitated the rise of some of the sport’s brightest stars. One of them is the King’s son Kyle Petty. The young Petty had over 862 starts in the cup series and was able to secure 8 race wins.
Richard Petty, in a recent interview with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, revealed some unique details on his son’s racing days. He opened up about his son’s racing career in his 20s where he was more focused on planning to bend NASCAR rules. He also talked about his recruit, Noah Gregson.
Find out what Richard Petty said
Richard Petty revealed that Kyle Petty and Mike Beam, who now runs the Petty GMS shop together, had all the aides on how to cheat on race days. He pointed out that they were more concerned about bending rules and figuring out how to break them than think about racing. The King pointed out it was the way then.
“He did his own thing, OK. He didn’t listen to his dad. He and Mike Beam, who runs the shop here today grew up together. 20-year-old kids. Man, they had all kinds of ideas — how to cheat, how to do this. I think they spent more time trying to figure out how to break the rules than they did about racing. They had a big time. That was the way it was then. Again, so much different today,” Richard Petty said.
Richard Petty also talked about the difference in the racing style of Petty GMS’s recruit Noah Gregson and current driver Erik Jones. He pointed out that Erik is more of a calm and collected driver while Noah is unpredictable in terms of approaches on and off the track.
“That’s going to be the excitement because you never know what he’s going to come up with. He’s a completely different individual than Erik. One is just really calm. Erik just sorts of goes along with everything. And Noah comes in jumping and hollering,” says Richard Petty.
“So, you never know what’s going to come out of his mouth, or how he’s going to dress, or what he’s going to do. But the big deal is he’s getting the job done in the Xfinity deal, and I feel like he can do the same thing in the Cup Series,” added Richard Petty.
