William Byron was penalized 25 critical championship points and fined $50,000 for intentionally spinning Denny Hamlin under caution in Texas. The penalty dented Byron’s playoff chances big time. This forced Hendrick Motorsports to appeal against the penalties imposed.

A three-member NASCAR appeal committee has amended the penalty imposed on William Byron. The HMS driver will not lose his 25 championship points but will have to pay a $100,000 fine, double the amount of the initial fine.

NASCAR has created more backlash with the amendment. The officials failed to penalize Byron during the race, which was the right thing to do. They were forced to penalize him after the backlash they got from the community. But the severity of the penalty has brought in more criticism. Byron’s teammates Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott also have come out with criticism.

The penalty update comes with a lot of repercussions. Byron is now 14 points above the cut line and is relatively safe going into the ROVAL Round of 12 elimination race. Playoff rookies Chase Briscoe and Austin Cindric who were tied at P8 are now in the elimination zone.
