Rick Hendrick is an American businessman, former stock racing driver, and owner of Hendrick Motorsports. He is also the co-owner of JR Motorsports. He is the founder of the Hendrick automotive group, a nationwide network of car dealerships spread over 13 states. Hendrick started racing aged 14 but could not reach the levels of success required to climb the motorsport ladder.
Therefore, Hendrick shifted his focus to the business. He opened a used car lot with a well-established new car dealer, Mike Leith. Impressed by Hendrick’s business acumen, Leith named him the company’s General Sales Manager, aged only 23. He became the nation’s youngest Chevrolet dealer at 26 years old. This was a precursor to the Hendrick automotive group, which has since become the sixth-largest car dealership in the United States.
In 1984, Hendrick founded the All-Star Racing team, now Hendrick Motorsport. Even after impeccable business success, Hendrick’s childhood dream of driving was yet to be fulfilled. He got the opportunity to compete in 2 Cup Series races in 1987 and 1988, driving for his team Hendrick Motorsport. He also had one start in the Xfinity Series and the Camping Truck Series each.
