NASCAR isn’t worthy of racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway: Kyle Busch

Kyle Busch has demanded the exit of NASCAR from the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The veteran pointed out that the premier stock car racing championship isn’t worth racing on such an iconic track. Brickyard is one of the most prominent tracks in the world, and is the host of the IndyCar series event organized there, the Indy 500.

NASCAR used to race twice at the track—one on the oval and another on the Road Course track. Since 2021 the track has been hosting just Road Course races. The lack of attendance and reduced racing quality has caused concerns in the racing community. Busch is also disturbed the by the chaos that is on display during the triple overtime at COTA.

But I don’t know why we ever went to the road course, to be honest with you. I don’t think it did an uptick or changed a damn thing at Indy. If we can’t do a good enough job getting enough people to Indy to suffice for us staying on the oval, then we need to go somewhere else — just like anywhere. I’ll say that about any track,” said Kyle Busch.

Kyle Busch pointed out that the track history is built for F1 oval racing, and the road course layout is more of a parking lot. He said, “It’s not a fun road course. It’s a parking lot. I think the history here is built around the oval, and the road course is built for Formula 1 to take part in history,”.

He added that only the best of the best has won at Indy, and that’s the track’s legacy. Busch said, “You look at the list of drivers that have won here, and yeah, there were a few that backed into it, but the rest of the list is the best of the best, the who’s who of drivers and teams. You have to have horsepower, you have to have drag, you have to have downforce — all that stuff to have a successful run at Indy,”.

How to solve the Road Course restart issue

If not addressed soon enough, the issue with Road Courses will cause a more bad reputation for the sport. There were paths the sanctioning body could take to solve the issue. The first one is to extend the already extended restart line for the ladder, and allowing the race alder to create enough gap will help to end the pile-up.

The next way is to scrap the two-file restart and employ the single-file starts. This will defuse the chances of drivers attacking via multiple lanes. It will also help to spread the field easily, sending the drivers who are not the quickest to the back of the grid. NASCAR should also impose more sanctions on aggressors.
