2021 Cup Series Champion Kyle Larson has secured his first win of the 2023 season, keeping Chevrolet’s dominance at the start. They have now won 5 of the 7 races this season, three of which are courtesy of Hendrick Motorsports. The win is sweeter as HMS was the main contender for the win throughout the race.
Kyle Larson secured enough gap on the final restart with 14 laps left to comfortably score the win over teammate Josh Berry who finished P2. Larson’s path to victory was eased by the spin of teammate William Byron, who led the most laps on Sunday, with 21 laps left in the race. Byron holds the other two wins HMS scored this year.
“What an awesome Hendrickcars.com Chevy. Can’t say enough about it. I got into the 99 (Suarez) on pit road there sometime in the second stage, and we were awful after that. I was hoping the damage was the reason why, but they had to calm me down a little bit and get refocused and was able to get it done,” Kyle Larson said after the win.
The win was special for team owner Rick Hendrick for more than one season. The Hall of Fame owner’s son Ricky Hendrick died in a plane crash in 2004 on the same exact day alongside members of his No:5 crew. Larson’s Hendrickscars.com paint scheme is similar to was Ricky used to race in before the tragedy.
Trackhouse Racing’s Ross Chastain finished the race on P3, followed by the highest-finishing Toyota, Christopher Bell. Kevin Harvick was the highest-finishing Ford at P5, followed by Mitchel McDowell and Joey Logano finishing behind him. Pole sitter Alex Bowman secure P8. Ty Gibbs and Brad Keselowski secured the reaming top 10 finishes.
