Martin Truex Jr. wins at Dover
The 2017 Cuyp champion Martin Truex Jr. has proven to any doubters in the NASCAR community that he made the right decision to postpone his retirement plans as he still deserves the Cup seat. He scored his first point-paying win since September 2021 to end the 54-race drought and the desperate run for victory lane.
Dover Motor Speedway is adjacent to the hometown of the No:19 Joe Gibbs Racing driver, making it his home track. He had big support from his family and friends from the stands. His brother Ryan Truex scored his maiden Xfinity win on the track on Monday, ending his poor run over the years and proving he deserves a spot at the top. Truex Jr. wins just give the family yet another reason to celebrate the weekend.
The No:19 team finally got the Pitstop call, and the right execution played a crucial role in him securing the win in the final restart. They went for a two-tire pit stop for the final re-start and held off a surging Ross Chastain with just 0.505s seconds margin. The No:1 Chevy had. The No:1 Chevy had 4 Fresh tires. Ryan Blaney scored the P3, while William Byron and Denny Hamlin secured the remaining spots.
“It feels incredible. I feel like we’ve been close a bunch of times, that’s for sure. Felt today, with that caution, what’s going to happen here and then good call by [crew chief] James [Small] to take two (tires) and then I was able to get a pretty good restart. Just thanks to everybody that stuck with me. We knew we could do this. We’ve shown we can lead laps and have dominated races, and it just never all came together. I’ve said we just had to keep doing what we were doing and not overthink it,’’ Martin Truex Jr. said after the win.
