“Fake Motorsport confirmed,” NASCAR Twitter reacts to 2022 Phoenix cup Season Finale TV rating
Joey Logano wins 2022 cup championship
The 2022 NASCAR cup series ended with a dominant display from the Team Penske drivers resulting in a second cup series title for Joey Logano. The No:22 Mustang driver ended his season just as he started in the LA exhibition race. He is the first cup champion in the Next-Gen era.
The build-up to the 2022 season finale was one of the most dramatic ones NASCAR fans witnessed in the last five years. The postseason saw the early exit of veterans Busch and Harvick. Defending champion Kyle Larson got eliminated by a playoff rookie and later went on to have a heated confrontation with Bubba Wallace. And to cap it all off, Ross Chastain’s video game move at Martinsville.
After the highly anticipated finale, the Television rating for the event was released. It is frustrating for fans concerned about the sport losing its fan base. The NBC rating was 1.86 as 3.213 million viewers witnessed the spectacle on Sunday. It was a 1.95 rating and 3.214 million viewers last year when Larson was on the podium.
Even with the reduced ratings, it was the most streamed cup racing event in NBC sports history, with 141,500 Average Viewers per minute. The NASCAR Cup Series’s season-long viewership averaged 2.454 million viewers across NBC, USA Network, and Peacock. The NASCAR Xfinity Series finale from Phoenix averaged 0.58 and 994,000 viewers in the USA, lower than last year. The Truck Series finale rating also went down.
How NASCAR Twitter reacted to the TV rating
Fans on Twitter accused the Playoff system of the fall in TV ratings. They pointed out that the winners taking all races hamper the sports entertainment value. Some fans suggested that holding the finale in a track such as Phoenix also reduces the entertainment value.
