“Vendetta against Chevy, even cheating won’t help him win”- NASCAR Twitter reacts to Austin Dillon’s L-1 Martinsville penalty
Only Chevy Camaro ZL1 teams are sanctioned, by NASCAR so far this season.

NASCAR has released the penalty reports for the 2023 Martinsville regular Season race weekend. Richard Childress Racing No:3 Chevy Camaro ZL1 driver Austin Dillon has been hit with a hefty fine and associated sanctions for L-1 infractions. He finished the race at P12 and was never a contender for the lead throughout the day.
The team is penalized for violating the “overall assembled vehicle rules related to the underwing assembly and hardware,”. So, the crew chief of the No:3 team, Keith Rodden, is suspended for two races and will also have to pay a fine of $75,000. RCR will lose 60 drivers’ championship points, just like Dillon, who will lose 60 of his championship points. He will also lose 5 playoff points.
RCR can appeal against the decision, but if the three-membered appeal committee finds them guilty of the cited violation, they can expect any major change in the point penalty. NASCAR has changed the rule following the Hendrick Motorsports penalty drama that restricts the appeal body from reducing the penalty’s severity beyond a certain limit.
The 2023 season so far has been conserving for the RCR owner’s grandson. He finished outside the top 15 in all but three races this season. He has just two top 10s, while his new teammate Kyle Busch has already secured the playoff spots. His best finish this season has been the P3 at Bristol, which was expected as he is a skillful dirt racer. Dillon will definitely want to secure a win early this season, unlike in 2022, where he had to wait till the final races of the season for the win.

Here is how fans reacted to Austin Dillon’s penalty
The RCR drivers penalty has stirred up some conversation on Twitter. Some fans are pointing out that Chevy’s are getting caught this season, and NASCAR, might be targeting them. Some claimed that the Chevy teams were cheating. There were also trolls targeting the drivers in their ability to score a win.
The other penalties imposed on the day all went to different crew members. Chris Jackson (rear tire changer) and David Smith (jack) of the No. 78 Cup team are suspended as they were the reason behind the loose tire that prompted the race-changing caution. Xfinity Series crew chiefs Mike Bumgarner, Jeff Meendering, and Mike Scearce are fined $5000 each for lug-nut violations.
