WATCH: Chase Elliott slams into the wall at Michigan after wild spin following a ‘really weird’ tire blow
Michigan will be Chase Elliott’s worst season finish after the P38 in the season opener Daytona 500.

Hendrick Motorsports driver Chase Elliott was determined to secure a win and playoff spot at Michigan coming into the weekend, but his dreams were short-lived as he crashed out on lap 35 of the race. He will not race in the remaining laps of the race postponed to Monday due to rain and will shift his focus to the coming two road course races.
Elliott lost control of his NAPA Sponsored No:9 Chevy Camaro ZL1 coming into turn on lap 34 of the Sunday race. His car spun after his tire blew and backed into the outside wall. The HMS driver will be credited a P36 finish, one place above Kyle Busch, who crashed in an incident involving Ryan Blaney on lap 14.
His third DNF of the season puts him in a unique position going into the season’s final three races. The probability of Elliott making it into playoffs with just points is zero, and he needs to secure a win to get his spot in the last 16. His best shot for success is the upcoming two road course races, Indy and Glen. His superior Road Course skill gives him the edge over other drivers in the bubble.
Elliott found himself in this situation after he missed six races earlier this season after a tibia injury from a snowboarding accident. He was also hit with a one-race suspension for right-rearing Denny Hamlin. It’s not just Elliott who is in this situation; his teammate Alex Bowman who missed four race weeks, desperately needs a win for playoffs.

Chase Elliott is shocked by the result

While talking about the final result after getting released from the infield care center, Elliott said he was shocked about the tire blowing early in the race. He added that he wasn’t hard on the tire as well.
“I feel good. Hate [that] it happened, obviously. Really early in the day to have a tire blow like that; it was really weird. Bummer, but not surprised. Obviously, we stayed out, but I don’t even feel like I was being hard on it. Just add it to the list…” RACER quotes Elliott.
It’s the first time Elliott has found himself in such a desperate situation, but he isn’t ready to give up as he insists nothing has changed for him, and is prepared for the challenge. He said, “I told y’all that the week I got back. Nothing’s changed.”
