The 2022 Goodyear 400 marked the next-Gen cars’ Darlington debut and contrary to the past the track is notorious for the wreck, crashes and hits had a quiet day of racing until the final lap where veteran Joey Logano secured his maiden NASCAR win of this season after he slammed No:24 Hendrick Motorsport driver William Byron who was cruising for his 3ed win of the season into the wall from the rear.
Joey Logano took out William Byron to end his 40-race winless run in the No:22 Team Penske Racing Ford Mustang and also secured the second win of Penske in 2022 following Austin Cindrics Daytona 500 win. Though Joey Logano is famous for his aggressive style of racing his Darlington win divided the fans when it come to the outcome of the race.
William Byron called Logano an idiot and a moron after the race whereas Joey Logano defended his decision sitting an early race incident among the duo where Joey Logano was pinned to the wall by Byron. Now NASCAR legend and HMS Vice Chairman Jeff Gordon has come forth calling out Joey Logano for his antics.
Jeff Gordon is no stranger to on-track aggression as he once got a 25-point deduction and $100,000 fine for intentionally wrecking Clint Bowyer at Phoenix International Raceway in 2012 but the HMS legend now warns Joey Logano of repercussions for his actions.
Find out what Jeff Gordon said
Jeff Gordon was quick to call out Joey Logano for his last lap aggression towards William Byron as he acknowledged that it is quite hard to a win taken away in the last lap like the way it happened at Darlington. He went on to say that the aggressive Joey Logano could have passed William Byron clean due to the fact that the No:24 car was getting loose but chose not to do that. He added that Darlington was a wild day with cars getting crashed or wrecked.
“It’s unfortunate to see a win be taken away from him on the last lap like that. You know, Logano’s aggressive. And, I mean, William’s car, I believe, was getting really, really loose. So, Logano had a shot at him to do it clean and chose to do it a different way. That’s Cup racing, and this was a wild day and tore up a bunch of cars,” Jeff Gordon said.
Jeff Gordon went on to say that he would have liked to see the incident taking place differently though he isn’t the driver of the car. He went on to say he is sure that Joey Logano is going to come up with some justification for his cations and caytioned him that Willaim Byron got a payback coming at the way of the 2017 cup champion at some point in the future.
“I wasn’t in the car. I’m not driving. Those guys have to settle that out there. I would have liked to have seen it done differently. I’m sure Joey’s going to justify it, and William’s got payback coming to Joey, I’m sure, at some point. So that’s the way it works,” Jeff Gordon added.
