The team that had the most to prove coming into the Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway, the Cook Out 400, was Richard Childress Racing. They were still facing backlash over Austin Dillon win at the track, after wrecking Joey Logano, in 2024. The No:3 team silenced the critic, ended their one-year winless streak, by securing the trophy.

Unlike last time, Austin Dillon’s win was more convincing, as he led 107 laps on the way to win, overcoming the challenge from 23XI Racing drivers, Alex Bowman and Ryan Blaney. The last time an RCR car led 100+ laps was in the 1998 Daytona 500 curtesy of Dale Earnhardt, making it an historic moment for them. What makes it more special was the fact that he raced with a broken rib.

Man, that feels good. Got to thank the Good Lord above. I really wanted that one. Last year, hurt really bad. Just going through the whole process of it. But this one feels so sweet. Man, I love Richmond. I was thrown down a lot this week. Didn’t feel great. I’m actually racing with a broken rib right now for the last two weeks, and man, that was awesome.

Austin Dillon told Marty Snider of NBC Sports.

The Hall of Fame owner of the team, Richard Childress is over the moon seeing his grandson back on the victory lane and redeeming himself from the 2025 controversy. He credited the driver, No:3 team crew chief Richard Boswell and the rest of the crew for the solid win. The veteran was holding his breath in the last lap, when Dillon was on the lead.

[Crew chief] Richard Boswell, everybody at RCR, ECR — we just worked hard and I’m just so proud of that group. Every one of them has put so much in, and Austin was just dead set to come back here and try to go win this race like he had it won last year. I just kept holding my breath… when he took that white I took an easy breath.

Austin Dillon explains why the Richmond win is special

For the two times Xfinity Series champion Austin Dillon, the Richmond win is a statement as it proves he still deserves the No:3 seat and has more wins left in him. The fact that he has been the driver that has won races for RCR in the 2024 and 2025, despite having a two-time champion Kyle Busch as a teammate, earns him more respect of the community.

Talking about the victory on his post-race interview, Dillon thanked for the timing and explained how much happy he is to win the race in front of his wife & kids. The last two seasons has been a roller coaster ride for the veteran racer; hence he is thankful to his grandfather Childress for backing him through the challenging period.

God has timing, and his timing is the best timing. I’m so excited to get my wife and kids here to celebrate with us. Man, it’s so sweet. This is so special. Every one of these means so much to me and my grandfather for all that he’s put up and believing in me because there’s been a lot of ups and downs and it could have been easy for him to change the drivers in this No. 3 car…

The race win isn’t only a positive momentum building one for RCR, that will benefit his veteran teammate Kyle Busch most probably, it also gives them a massive payout from the prize pool at the end of the season. The missed out on millions last year owing to the disqualification from post-season and this win is the financial redemption they need as well.
