Shane van Gisbergen‘s debut at the Iowa Speedway was very eventful. The street course circuit master ran around the 0.875-mile short-oval track and finally finished in P31. Although Gisbergen looked decent in pace and performance, multiple mid-race spinouts and crashes caused him to lose a lot of running. Moreover, the Kiwi nearly avoided ending his race early during the Tyler Reddick and Christopher Bell wreck.
At around Lap 170 of the Iowa Corn 350, Carson Hocevar attempted a very risky move and tried to overtake in Turn-1 after going three-cars wide. Hocevar squeezed between Shane van Gisbergen and Joey Logano at the time, leading to contact with the latter’s #22 Ford. Gisbergen was left fuming after this incident and immediately took to the team radio to berate the incident involving the three drivers.
Shane van Gisbergen took to the team radio and talked critically about Carson Hocevar and his dirty tactics. The 36-year-old said on the radio and asked Hocevar to immediately apologize to him and Joey Logano for the collision. Gisbergen further lambasted the #77 driver and labeled him a ‘wanker’ for shoving his car three-wide into Turn 1.
Hey, go apologize to the 22, That wanker in the 77 just shoved it three-wide.
Shane van Gisbergen said on the team radio.
Neither of the drivers involved in the incident incurred massive damage to their cars, and they resumed racing as intended. However, soon after this minor incident, the massive wreck between Christopher Bell and Tyler Reddick occurred. Shane van Gisbergen managed to steer clear of the debris and cars involved in the accident and went on to drive his race without any issues.

Shane van Gisbergen reveals he’s getting ‘better and better’ every week
Shane van Gisbergen has performed very well in 2025, winning three coveted races. Gisbergen couldn’t quite keep up with the winning momentum at Iowa, as he was already on the back foot after starting the race in P21. A mediocre start, coupled with multiple in-lap incidents, caused him to lose his running on the track and ultimately finish in P31. Regardless of losing places, the 36-year-old is positive about his outing and reckons that he is getting better with each passing week.

Breaking down his performance on Sunday, Shane van Gisbergen revealed that he made gains on the track during the restarts. The veteran reckoned that he had great speed and was getting right in the mix if it weren’t for the multiple incidents mid-race. The 36-year-old accepted that this had been his weakness, but still pointed out that he was getting better and better every week. Although Gisbergen accepted that a P31 result wasn’t great, he still walked out of the weekend with a lot of positives.
I felt like on most restarts, that’s where we were making our gains. We had good speed and were getting right in the mix. That’s been a weakness of mine, and I feel like we’re getting better and better every week. We just need to get building on that. It’s not a great result, but there’s a lot of positives that have come out of today.

Regardless of a woeful outing at Iowa, Shane van Gisbergen is known to excel on road course circuits. As such, the Trackhouse star is likely to show up with much better results in the upcoming race. Gisbergen is already a top-two finisher at the Watkins Glen circuit and would hope to keep up with the streak, if not surpass it, and achieve a race win.
