Veteran broadcaster Stephen A. Smith found himself in hot waters, as he often does with his hot takes, after claiming NASCAR drivers are athlete’s. Three times Cup Series champion Joey Logano didn’t like the comment and he gave the perfect response by highlighting how the comments are nothing but desperate attempt to remain relevant.

The words from the Team Penske Racing driver offended Smith and he was quick to respond on his Mad Dog Sports Radio show. He pointed out that he is entitled to have an opinion about NASCAR and defended his controversial take by highlighting he has been the face of the No:1 TV shows in US for 14 years.

Let me speak to Mr. Joey Logano, I don’t know you from a can of paint. Why can’t I just have an opinion about NASCAR? Why do I have to be doing it to stay relevant? My television show has been No. 1 in the morning for 14 straight years. I’m on television and radio, and my career spans 30 years.

Stephen A. Smith said Mad Dog Sports Radio show.

The veteran pointed out that he doesn’t have to make bold claims to remain relevant as he has always been someone that has been relevant in the media. The comments from Joey Logano have hit the mark with Stephen A. Smith, and the entertainer now might make more public comments to take further advantage of the beef to further establish himself, as he often does.

What do you mean ‘To get a job’ or ‘to keep a job?’ Check the news. Google me. I don’t have that concern. I’ve been blessed by God enough not to have that concern… Do I look like somebody that needs to be relevant. I am relevant.

Stephen A. Smith added via video shared on his YouTube channel.

Denny Hamlin got the perfect response to Stephen A. Smith

On the latest episode of his Actions Detrimental podcast, Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin shared his thoughts on the NASCAR drivers are not athlete claim. He pointed out that though he has seen the racer do unathletic things outside of a car, the things they do inside them is something a non-athletic person that haven’t trained for years can do.

Some are athletes. … Under that definition, I say yes, NASCAR drivers are athletes. I have seen many NASCAR drivers do very unathletic things outside of a race car. But that’s not what their bodies are trained to do… When you train for a specific sport for most of your life, your body gets trained to be able to do that. Why I say what we do is athletic is that [others] would never be able to sit in that car this weekend in Talladega

Denny Hamlin said.

The temperature inside the cockpit and the g-force on every corner isn’t something a regular person or even an amateur can handle. He then highlighted how Smith has made a career out of making hot takes and the NASCAR community needs to have a thick skin, as it’s pointless to get offended with everything.

Turn that wheel, sit in that heat, maintain the g-force. Your bodies are not trained to do that. The strength and the stamina is the part of that — no casual person would be able to do our jobs… The guy has hot takes every day. Who cares? Are you offended? Stop being so f*****g offended. Have some thick skin.

Denny Hamlin added.

The comments from the three times Daytona 500 champion are on point. Ignoring the hot takes and showing the fans what it really takes to be successful in the sport is the best response to someone like Smith. It would be interesting to see how the beef is going to playout in the coming days.
