Released in 1990, Days of Thunder was one of the biggest box office successes of Tom Cruise’ career and it showcased the emotional side of NASCAR to some perfection. A sequel to the movie is in work and is set to be released on June 3, 2028. It is going to feature the Hollywood superstar in the lead role alongside Anne Hathaway.
Ahead of this weekend’s regular season finale race at Daytona, Cruise talked to the drivers and the whole community in the drivers meeting. He explained what they are trying to do by making a sequel to a movie that was released more than three decades ago. The Action Star wants the world to once again experience the culture of premier stock car racing.
It’s a culture, and I think that I was very proud to be able to reflect that in the first Days of Thunder, and I’m honored to share it with the world, but I just wanted you all to know that’s basically what we’re gonna go for with this one.
Tom Cruise said at Daytona.
Further talking about the point, Tom Cruise pointed out that they are giving the general audience an opportunity to understand the speed, excitement and danger the sport offers. In the same conversation he also thanked the drivers for the support so far and asserted that he has so much respect for their careers.
Give the audience that opportunity to understand what it is as a team, as a community, what it is for NASCAR — the speed, the excitement, and all of that danger and stuff. Of course, I love it…Anyways, real pleasure, and thank you for the very welcome. We’re here, we’re just gonna do the best we can, and I really respect you all, and thanks for welcoming me.

Tom Cruise recalls unforgettable Daytona memory
In the same conversation, Tom Cruise recalled his ats experience from Daytona. It was from the time he shot the movie, where he spun out on the backstraight with heavy Camry equipment’s on his car. It was a wild moment, as the car caught on fire and he was in real danger.

I am so excited to be back here. Last time I was at this track, actually, I was on the backstraight, and I was shooting with two very heavy cameras traveling — I don’t know — 180mph, and suddenly, the hood was off the car and there were two heavy cameras, and I’m on the backstraight, the sun is setting, and I’m trying to get all my lines out before we lost the light, and suddenly the whole car was in flames.
Tom Cruise said.
The crew couldn’t come to him on time, as the radio wasn’t working and he wasn’t able to converse with them real time. Fortunately, he was able to get out of the car safety and eventually gave NASCAR one of its best ever movies that attracted many casually fans to the sport.
It turned from a barbecue to a bonfire on the backstraight…Couldn’t even get the crew to come in and help me, but just because the radio didn’t work in the backstraight, and I hear that that’s still possible, right? (crowd laughs) You guys didn’t fix that. Well, that’s good, all right. Listen, it’s a real honor for me to be here.
Tom Cruise added.
The comment from the veteran shows the passion he still has for motorsports and how he is investing a lot into sport by giving them another opportunity to be culturally relevant. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for Days of Thunder 2.
