Bubba Wallace‘s race at Richmond turned into a nightmare after the 23XI Racing crew suffered from a pit-stop blunder. Wallace led the most laps in the race and was poised for a race win following his victory in Stage 2. However, during the green-flag pit cycle of Stage 3, the #23 driver came for a routine pit stop, which turned into a disaster, as his winning chances were ruined from that point.

Bubba Wallace‘s performances looked strong from the beginning of the Richmond weekend as he started the race from P7, looking strong for a victory contention. The 31-year-old put forth a highly consistent and impressive drive at the Cook Out 400 and was P3 by the end of Stage 2. However, during the pit stop, Wallace came in as usual and left the pit stall hastily before the tires could be fit properly.

As soon as Bubba Wallace exited his pitbox, the front-left tire came loose and separated from the car. If Wallace had joined the track on these conditions, he could have received a big penalty. However, the #23 driver was quick on his feet and went into Chase Briscoe‘s pit box in hopes of receiving some from the #19’s pit crew.

Briscoe’s squad took note of the incident, and the pit members rushed to help Bubba Wallace and reattach his lost tire. This helped him rejoin the track and not get a major penalty. However, the 31-year-old still received a penalty due to pitting outside his assigned box. Wallace had to restart the race at the tail end of the lead lap.

Following the penalty, Wallace desperately lost track positions and couldn’t quite recover from the incident. The #23 driver ultimately finished in P28, much farther from what he could have achieved if it weren’t for the pit-lane mishap. Regardless, the 23XI Racing star possessed great pace in his chassis and is looking strong in his chances for the playoffs.

Bubba Wallace’s teammate labels Richmond outing as ‘worst night’ for 23XI Racing

While Bubba Wallace suffered from some extremely disappointing circumstances, his teammate at 23XI Racing, Tyler Reddick, had problems of his own. Daniel Suarez collided with Ty Gibbs at around Lap 182, sending Gibbs barrelling into Reddick’s #45 Toyota.

This caused the 29-year-old to lose control of his car and lose positions in the pecking order. As such, he got real on the team’s outing at the Cook Out 400 and labeled it the worst night.

Tyler Reddick revealed that his car went from being one of the fastest to the slowest in the aftermath of the Suarez-Gibbs collision at Richmond, after ultimately finishing in P34. Even Bubba Wallace’s winning chances were shattered after his pitlane mishap.

As such, the #45 driver christened the team’s outing on Saturday as the ‘worst night’ possible as they walked out of the weekend with much fewer points than they hoped to achieve.

Quite a bit [of damage], [It] went from a car that was one of the fastest on the track to one of the slowest, so yeah, it affected it quite a bit. Yeah, it’s pretty much worst case scenario for us,

23XI Racing must look back on the pit lane incident with Bubba Wallace and ensure better communication on the team radio to avoid such issues. Reports suggest that Wallace refused to comment on anything following the end of the Richmond race. The 31-year-old will prepare for the final race of the Cup Series at Darlington before shifting his focus to the championship playoffs.
