Former NBA basketball player Sonny Weems faced racial abuse from fans while playing in the Chinese Basketball Association. In recent, a video went viral in which it was seen that CBA fans were passing the racial comments “n*g*a” and “Get out of China” at three-time CBA champion.

This unpleasant event is expected to be of last Thursday when the Southern Tigers were playing a game against the Liaoning Flying Leopards. In this game, a fight broke out between Chinese player Han Dejun and Sonny Weems due to which they both were ejected from the game.

Chinese Basketball Association condemns the racial comments by the fans on Sonny Weems

In the video, we can clearly hear the racist comments from the CBA fans, they started yelling the abuses just after Sonny Weems came out of the bus with his teammate. This incident is been noted by CBA and they have condemned such comments from the fans.

According to CNN, on Friday CBA said, “it has a zero-tolerance attitude toward any discriminatory words or deeds,” they have even published an open letter to the fans to not be part of such incident which spreads racial differences between the people.

In the letter, it was mentioned, “Whether on or off the field, fans should watch the game in a civilized manner, respect each other, do not do anything that damages the reputation of the team.”

Even the NBA Hall of Fame Yao Ming, now president of the CBA talked about how sports help to decrease the tensions between the two groups. Here’s what he said to the media, “There’s bound to be traffic on bridges — so sometimes we see collisions, it may take some time to resolve some issues … But we want to keep the bridges intact.”

China comes in support of Sonny Weems after the racial abuse on him

After the incident, the basketball community in China came into support of Sonny Weems on the Chinese social media application ‘Weibo’. This incident has happened just a few weeks before the Winter Olympics in Beijing where people from all over the globe will come to represent their country, it will be the responsibility of the Chinese authority to avoid such incidents.
