“Last night I could barely sleep”: Kyrie Irving on not being prepared for the consequences of staying unvaccinated
Kyrie Irving
Kyrie Irving is yet to debut this season for Brooklyn Nets as he was earlier banished by the team to play or even practice under the official rules and regulation of government at New York City related to player vaccination which made a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for professional athletes and Kyrie Irving decided to stay unvaccinated. But now the Brooklyn Nets have decided to bring their 29 years old veteran guard back in rotation for road games and team practices after months into the season.
Kyrie Irving last played a NBA game during the 2020-21 play-offs against the Milwaukee Bucks (Game 4) where he got his ankle injured and since then has stayed out of the game. In the 2020-21 season Kyrie Irving averaged 26.9 PPG, 6 APG and 4.8 RPG. Now with a comeback been scheduled for Kyrie Irving, he unfortunately entered the league’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols which had him side-lined again but luckily the guard fought through it and submitted negative reports which made him available for Brooklyn Nets team practice on Wednesday.
After months of being unavailable for any physical interviews Kyrie Irving post practice talked with some of the local reporters present at the facility and had a lot to say about his return to the National Basketball Association. Kyrie Irving seemed worried and stressed with his condition wishing to not mess up this return where as the coaches, staff and his teammates were happy seeing him back with a good shape and even believed that Kyrie will have no problem running it back.

Kyrie Irving on not being prepared for the consequences of not getting vaccinated
After the team practice on Wednesday, Kyrie Irving told the reporters that he knew the consequences but wasn’t prepared for them with any stretch of the imagination. Replying to questions related to his return the reply from his side showed some fear since he has been completely shut downed for past three months in the NBA as he quoted “It’s felt like days have just been slowly being crossed off the calendar while I’m sitting at home, I’m like, Man, I just don’t want to come out and not be who I know I am to be as a player and just getting up and down, my heart racing and nervous and touching the basketball again.”
This statement of Kyrie Irving speaks for himself stating the fear of the guard to mess up because of a physical condition or just end up running up and down while not really doing much on the court. Further adding to it he also mentioned how he wasn’t even able to sleep at night before the practice because of all the concerns he has in his mind. Kyrie also has a tentative schedule of his return planned as he in the interview said “I’m just looking forward to that first game, whether it be on the fifth or whether it be somewhere after that however I can get back in shape on an optimum level and be able to be productive that’s where I’m aiming for.”
Kyrie Irving in the end also mentioned a plan he wants to run with James Harden and Kevin Durant as he quoted “With us getting together at this time in our careers, we wanted to take advantage of it. We have a lot more left in the tank but obviously our age between us three, us being at a certain level of mastery in this game is only gonna last for a certain amount of time, so we want to strike while the iron is hot.” Kyrie adding to it also said that he is ready to take all the challenges he comes across since it is what he has always wanted to be and worked for. On the return may be Kyrie doesn’t erupts but eventually as he gets more time around and becomes habitual again him owning teams while snatching ankles of their best players will again be very normal in the league.
