Luka Doncic and his mom Mirjam Poterbin
A legal battle between mother and son is not very often, and certainly not in the NBA. Perhaps, that is one of the reasons, Luka Doncic suing his own mother Mirjam Poterbin, made such breaking news in the league. The Dallas Mavericks superstar sued his mother because she refused to give up his trademark name. According to the details given by Luka, he wants to control his own brand name as he moves up in his career.
Mirjam has played a very crucial role in shaping Doncic’s basketball career; financially as well as building his career. She gave birth to Doncic on 28 February 1999. While Doncic was 9, his parents split up, leaving most of the responsibility on his mother.
Poterbin was a model at a younger age and also took part in the Miss Slovenia pageant in 1993 when she was 19 years old. Despite losing in the initial round, she hosted the famous show “Wheel of Fortune.” Her modeling and TV career, allowed her to earn money and give her son a better life. For a brief period, Mirjam also ran a beauty salon with her mother.
Doncic was famous in his country from a very young age and she took care of most of his financial affairs, while he played basketball in Europe. However, it appears that she is back in the modeling business, while she continues to thrive in her career as an entrepreneur.
Did Luka Doncic give his mother Mirjam Poterbin permission to use his name?
The Slovenian star gave his mother Poterbin permission to register and use his name as a trademark during his rookie year in 2018. Poterbin wanted to use the name for her company. However, according to Mark Stein, the NBA reporter, the Mavericks star told Mirjam’s company in writing to give up the trademark, which did not happen.
In conversation with Stein, Doncic said that he filed a petition with the United States Patent and Trademark Office regarding canceling the “Luka Doncic 7” trademark name which was controlled by Poterbin. After Doncic asked Mirjam to give up the name, upon refusal from her, he sued her for using his name.

Luka Doncic says suing his own mom was the only resort for him to control his brand
As per Stein, Doncic filed the petition against his mother, Mirjam Poterbin after dropping a massive 47 against France in the EuroCup Basketball in Sep. 2022. As a player and a person, Doncic said, “I have a lot to look forward to.” He also added that it is important for him to control his brand so that he can give back to his community. “It’s vital for me to control my own brand and focus on giving back to my community,” Doncic had said.
Earlier, during the last season, Doncic unveiled a new logo for his Jordan brand shoes and apparel. The logo had made use of his initials, LD, his number with the Mavericks 77, and the letter “S”, the initial for his home country of Slovenia. He applied to trademark the name “Luka Doncic” which was “preliminarily” rejected by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
According to Stein, for Luka suing his mother, Poterbin was the “last resort in a bid to gain full control over his name, brand, charitable foundation and business affairs, since conflicting trademarks prevent Doncic from holding clear rights to use his own name.” However, according to the latest report, Doncic dropped the case against his mother and ended the legal fight.
