While Dwyane Wade was picked fifth overall and was a great player too, there was more buzz surrounding the first overall, LeBron James and third pick Carmelo Anthony. LeBron before entering the league had already declared him “the chosen one” of basketball and Carmelo Anthony who played for the Syracuse Orange had elevated status for leading the college team to a championship in his freshman year.

On the Point Forward podcast, Dwade revealed what he considered was the only option to include his name along with LeBron and Anthony. “I wanted to strike first. I wasn’t a big name in the class like those guys, so I needed something to separate myself or something that would put me on their level and winning a championship at 24 was that to me.”
