Is there a more controversial figure in sports entertainment history than ‘The Worm’ Dennis Rodman? The 5-time NBA champion is known for his erratic behavior, dressing style, tattoos, piercings, different hair color styles, his affairs, and who can ever forget that trip to Las Vegas between the NBA Finals in 1998.

Most recently, during an episode of VladTV, Rodman was asked about his thoughts on former NBA player Gilbert Arenas’ take on how Larry Bird could beat LeBron James in a one-on-one matchup. Rodman didn’t think twice before disagreeing and said, “If Larry Bird played in this era, I think he’d be in Europe. His game was fit for Boston at that time in the ’80s and stuff like that. Today’s world, oh hell no. There’s no way.

Rodman then talked about Nikola Jokic being a much better player and talent than Bird. Rodman said, “Oh my God, he’s slow as hell. He plays slow, but that guy got a game. I think he’s better than Larry Bird. In this day and age, yeah. I’m saying he can shoot that three like woosh, my God. So, wow. Compare him to Larry Bird, I think people would pick him.”

Christopher Michael Russo, also known as Mad Dog, discussed Rodman’s comments on First Take. He said, “Dennis Rodman, now? He’s not a great player, he’s a unique player. … He couldn’t score.” This was another intriguing take, considering Rodman was the heart and soul of the Detroit Pistons and the Chicago Bulls and was one of his time’s best defenders and rebounders.

Not the first time that Dennis Rodman has dissed Larry Bird

Back in 1987, when Rodman was playing for the Detroit Pistons and his team lost to Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics in their Eastern Conference Finals series, Rodman would go on to criticize Bird, saying he was overrated because he was white. He later apologized for his actions and admitted that it was a rookie mistake and that he said things in the heat of the moment.

His latest comments dissing Bird yet again come as a surprise. At this point in his life, Rodman should be celebrating and praising one of his rivals and an all-time great. Many believe he should just acknowledge that the era he and Bird played in and the era in which LeBron and Jokic play are different and special in their own ways.
