Brittney Griner imprisonment to get a groundbreaking update as talks in Turkey are underway for prisoner swap

Brittney Griner

The American government is still trying to deport Brittney Griner while she is still detained in Russia and facing a nine-year imprisonment. A considerable meeting is supposedly going to happen this week when the CIA Director meets with Russian intelligence in Turkey and he is believed to bring up Griner and another detained Marine’s circumstances.

Due to Brittney Griner’s imprisonment in Russia since February 2022, the topic involving her is far from finished. She was arrested by Russian authorities and accused of drug smuggling when vape cartridges containing cannabis oil were discovered in her luggage as it is prohibited in Russia.

A Russian court dismissed her appeal last month, which resulted in her being given a nine-year term for narcotics possession. The government is intensifying its attempts to have the WNBA star return as soon as possible, and a significant meeting is reportedly scheduled to be held in Turkey to discuss the issue.

In a meeting about Russia, the Director of the CIA will reportedly discuss Griner, according to a report. “The official, who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Burns and Sergey Naryshkin, the head of Russia’s SVR spy agency, would not discuss settlement of the war in Ukraine. Burns is also expected to raise the cases of Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner and Michigan corporate security executive Paul Whelan, two Americans detained in Russia whom the Biden administration has been pressing to release in a prisoner exchange,” as reported by the Associated Press.

Brittney Griner and her unfair circumstance that is still undergoing in Russia

Russian authorities detained Brittney Griner after hauling her over in February at Sheremetyevo International Airport. The two-time WNBA defensive player of the year and seven-time all-star was found to be in the custody of vape cartridges carrying medical cannabis by Russian Customs. After being found guilty of drug offenses in Russia, Griner was given a nine-year prison term in August.

On August 15, Griner’s legal team filed an appeal against her nine-year sentence, but it was ultimately denied in October. They still believe that her punishment was excessive even though she could have received a 10-year prison sentence. The defense attorneys argued that some other convicted people in comparable situations across Russia received fewer sentences, and some even received parole.

On August 11, representatives of the Russian government revealed that although discussions for a prisoner swap have already started with the American government, there have been no further advancements. Griner, the 32-year-old member of the Phoenix Mercury, has won two Olympic gold medals. She has also participated in WNBA off-season competitions playing for UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia since 2014.

What’s next for Brittney Griner after the meeting?

The highest-ranking face-to-face interaction between American and Russian officials since before Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the invasion in February occurred at the meeting between the CIA Director and Russian intelligence. Although it’s unclear how the meeting will impact the talks to return Griner home, there is undoubtedly mounting pressure on the US government and the Joe Biden administration to act and stop the situation from getting worse.

The idea was reported to the Associated Press by a White House official, who chose to remain anonymous because they are not permitted to make public comments about the meeting.

According to reports, Griner was recently transported to a Russian correctional colony, which raises questions about her health given that Russian penal colonies are renowned for brutality and harsh employment. Legal experts and hostage negotiators contend that Russia is too preoccupied with creating chaos to engage in discussions, which is what appears to have led to the breakdown of talks between the US and Russia.
