“It is the statement of the value of a black or gay person” Brittney Griner’s coach calls out LeBron James whilst making an emotional plea to US Government
The situation revolving around Brittney Griner’s arrest has been a whirlpool of emotional struggle. For over four months the female basketball phenom has been detained for carrying vape hash oil through the Russian airport customs. She was accused of attempting to smuggle illegal narcotics into the country and their law has a strict policy against it.
The WNBA player has been long out of reach from her family and representatives in the United States. Only recently has she been able to get into contact with them telling her partner Cherelle Griner that she is “exhausted” by the way the Russian authorities have been treating her through the pre-trial detention period. It was fairly recently announced that she will have to serve an extended six months in detention starting this past Friday on the dawn of her trial.
Brittney Griner will most likely be found guilty
The Phoenix Mercury superstar began her trial on Friday after four months of waiting. Experts believe that the trial case was only for show and that the Russian authorities have already decided on the verdict of this case. They also said that Brittney Griner will most likely be found guilty and pleading to her “wrongful” act would heighten the chances of her being sentenced for a shorter period.
The honorary all-star wrote a letter to President Joe Biden which included these words, “I realize you are dealing with so much, but please don’t forget about me and the other American Detainees. Please do all you can to bring us home. I voted for the first time in 2020 and I voted for you. I believe in you. I still have so much good to do with my freedom that you can help restore. I miss my wife! I miss my family! I miss my teammates! It kills me to know they are suffering so much right now. I am grateful for whatever you can do at this moment to get me home.”
Phoenix Mercury coach Vanessa Nygaard calls out Biden’s administration
It is very unusual how absent the US administration has been throughout this distressing journey. Many believe that Brittney Griner is simply being held as a political pawn for the two parties to settle political deals of any sort. Cherelle claimed that the government promised her to help Brittney get an early release but eventually she lost all trust after barely seeing them make an effort to do so.
Vanessa Nygaard, Head Coach of the Phoenix Mercury spoke about the administration’s lethargy in a very powerful speech saying,“If it was LeBron, he would be home, right? It is a statement about the value of women. It is a statement about the value of a Black person. It is a statement about the value of a gay person. All of those things. And we know it. And so, that’s what hurts a little more. It’s great she was able to get that message to us. And hopefully some people are paying attention to it.”
