In an unfortunate turn of events for the Chicago Bulls and NBA fans alike, Lonzo Ball has suffered a season-ending knee injury. He will be missing the entirety of the 2023-24 season. The Bulls had earlier applied for a $10.2 Million disabled player exception to compensate the Point Guard and it has been awarded that they have been awarded the same by the NBA.

According to the exception, the team that has been awarded the same is allowed to replace a player who is out for the whole season. Accordingly, the Bulls can trade or claim a player who is in the final year of their contract or sign a free agent on a one-year deal in place of Lonzo Ball.

Although the Bulls expected Ball to not come back for this season, the news still is devastating. In the draft, Bulls Vice President Arturas Karnisovas clarified that Ball, who had not played a single minute of basketball since January 2022, would miss most of the upcoming season due to the knee injury. With the extra money that NBA has awarded the Bulls, they sure will look to sign some enticing players.

Whenever the Bulls decide to use the money, it is obvious that they need to use it wisely. The team had a very off last season and addressed some concerns by signing Jevon Carter, but this empty spot that Ball has left behind will have to be intelligently filled. To make sure Zach is not put under too much pressure, they might also look at a big name or go for exciting talents that may be available for cheap. Either way, it will be interesting to watch how the Bulls shape up the squad after this sad news.
