Can Nikola Jokic win 3 consecutive MVPs? The Nuggets star’s journey to joining an exclusive club

Nikola Jokic

Three consecutive MVP awards have only ever been earned by three players in NBA history. Don’t be shocked if Nikola Jokic joins them as number four. While Luka Doncic, Joel Embiid, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Kevin Durant all had greater MVP odds heading into the 2022–23 season, Jokic has quickly reentered the conversation. The Nuggets star’s argument continues to stand out despite the fact that the race is shaping up to be one of the most contested we’ve ever seen and that voter weariness is unavoidable.

Being mentioned in the discussion is clearly different from actually taking home the trophy, but Jokic’s road to winning consecutive awards is becoming more and more evident. Jokic is averaging 25.0 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 9.7 assists in 37 games. His scoring is somewhat lower than it was during his MVP seasons back-to-back, but he isn’t taking as many shots now that Michael Porter Jr. and Jamal Murray are both healthy again. He’s also enjoying one of the best scoring seasons we’ve ever witnessed.

Jokic is one of 308 players who have averaged 25 points or more a season since 1982. Do you want to know where he stands right now in terms of his shooting percentage, which takes into account his field goal, three-point, and free-throw percentages? No. 1. Jokic almost never makes a mistake. So far this season, he has shot among the greatest percentages in the NBA. From the midrange (52.8 percent), the floater (61.3 percent), and the rim (73.2 percent).

George Karl lauds Nuggets MVP, Nikola Jokic

The game is undoubtedly more positionless than ever thanks to Nikola Jokic. Despite being 6-foot-11, the Nuggets’ star player is equally skilled at dribbling, passing, and shooting the ball in addition to rebounding it. The Serbian powerhouse has amassed a resume impressive enough to rank among the greatest big men in history. The Joker has won back-to-back MVP awards. He also was selected to four All-Star and four All-NBA teams in just eight NBA seasons.

The league’s longest-tenured coach, George Karl, admitted on Twitter that he didn’t know how he would cover Jokic. The Hall of Famer praised Nikola even more by saying that the only other players against whom the former Coach of the Year felt this way were Michael Jordan and the 7-foot-1 Shaquille O’Neal. The 71-year-old said: “I’ve been watching Jokic for six seasons now. I think the best thing I can say about him is I still have no idea how I would cover him. The two other times I’ve felt that was against Michael and Shaq.”
