Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, was fatally beaten by police, according to horrific video evidence released by the Memphis Police in the US on Friday. On January 10, three days after being pulled over on suspicion of driving recklessly, Nichols passed away in the hospital. Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins was emotional regarding the set of events that were going on in his city. About an hour before the video of Memphis police beating Nichols was made public, Jenkins spoke to the media, but he sounded like a man who knew what was going to happen.

His message hit to the core of a team that is so ingrained in its community as he attempted to articulate the feelings that he and the other Grizzlies were experiencing in the wake of the arrest of five police officers for the murder of Nichols. He said, “Our team has sat and talked at length multiple times about what’s happened, what’s going to happen and we’ve been on the road the whole time.

He added “It’s hard to grasp what our city is going through right now. We can’t wait to get back home to put our arms around everyone in Memphis as they struggle with a loss of life, a senseless loss of life.” He also said, ”My words will only mean so much. I want to continue to encourage people to put their arms around each other, put their arms around the Nichols family, the Wells family to remember a beautiful life in Tyre Nichols — who I did not know, but I’m learning about.”

Other NBA stars like LeBron James and Chris Paul too condemned the killing of Nichols. CP3 via his Twitter account wrote, “Change is needed at all levels and we all need to do our part. We can’t lose our humanity as a society. To the Nichols family and Memphis community, my heart is with you tonight.”
