This NBA off-season has been spectacular to watch. Many blockbuster trades went down, such as Bradley Beal joining the Phoenix Suns and Chris Paul being traded to the Golden State Warriors. One trade that everyone expected to be a sure thing was Damian Lillard‘s trade request. This summer, Lillard requested a trade out of the Portland Trail Blazers and everyone expected the front office to oblige, as Lillard has been one of, if not the most loyal, players in the league, sticking it out with Portland ever since he was drafted, despite the management failing to put a worthy championship team around the superstar.
The trade has been stalled, with rumors flying around as to where the Miami Heat and Portland have reached regarding the trade. Lillard requested a trade on July 1st of this year, just 24 hours into free agency, and nothing has come to fruition as of now. Fans and media allege it is due to the fact that Lillard is a superstar-level player and the front office is not willing to let go of him for anything short of an excellent package, which the Heat are not willing to provide. Lillard averaged 32.2 points, 7.3 assists, and 4.8 rebounds in 58 games in 2022–23. He was selected to play in his seventh All-Star game.
He dropped a career-high 71 points on February 27, 2023, against the young Houston Rockets. Experts allege that the trade has not gone anywhere due to the Portland front office regarding Lillard as an asset. They recently drafted phenom Scoot Henderson with the 3rd pick in the 2023 trade, and he is viewed as a franchise player. Guess which position Henderson plays? He plays point guard in the exact same position as Lillard. The Trailblazers are aiming to get some high-value assets from the Heat in exchange for Lillard so that they can build around their new point guard. A trade that many assumed would’ve been completed as soon as Lillard gave in his request hasn’t gone anywhere after two months.
Regarding the latest updates on the trade according to sportswriter Brian Windhorst the Blazers want the Heat to empty out all of their assets for Damian Lillard. “They want the Heat to literally scrounge into every nook and cranny and produce everything they possibly can. The Heat don’t feel a need to do that.
How has Damian Lillard’s career looked so far?
Damian Lillard is a certified superstar and hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down despite turning 33 years old. He was selected sixth overall in the 2012 NBA draft by the Portland Trailblazers. Despite certain questions surrounding his turnover-to-assist ratio and being undersized, Lillard proved himself by winning Rookie of the Year. He averaged 19.0 points, 6.5 assists, and 3.1 rebounds as a rookie. He actually won the award unanimously.
Lillard made it to the All-Star team soon and has been nominated to the team seven times, along with seven All-NBA teams. He led the team to the playoffs over the next eight seasons after his rookie year. Lillard hasn’t seen much playoff success though; his farthest is the 2019 season, where they were swept by the Warriors in the conference finals. The Trailblazers haven’t made the playoffs in the past two seasons, despite Lillard averaging over 30 points this past season. Lillard has the worst playoff record, with 22 wins and 39 losses.
It looks like his time in Portland has come to an end, with Lillard requesting a trade from the franchise a day into the 2023 free agency. He stated his preffered destination was the current eastern conference champions Miami Heat. People around the league expected the trade to be done very quickly due to Lillard’s unwaivering loyalty to the franchise this past decade. His trade has been stalled for what seems like ages, with nothing coming to fruition, fans around the league can only wait for more news as come NBA season time, it”ll be pretty akward having a draft phenom in Scoot Henderson playing his position with Lillard still there.
