Sacramento Kings star De’Aaron Fox is not too fond of the new rule changes coming into the NBA’s new season. The NBA Board of Governors agreed on implementing two new rule changes for the upcoming NBA 2023-24 season.

According to Shams Charania, the league will make two major tweaks to the NBA rulebook. The first rule will change how the Coach’s challenge works. Moreover, now teams will be awarded another challenge if the first one is deemed successful. The second rule will punish players who are flopping by awarding the opposing team technical free throws. Various players have voiced their concerns and approval of the changes, with opinions clashing in the middle.

Although a majority of fans like the new rule changes, players like De’Aaron Fox are not too stoked by the introduction of the new flopping rule. The King’s star took to Twitter to voice his disfavor of the NBA’s new regulation.

The NBA clutch player of the Year pointed out that the rule would just give the referees too much control over the game. Sarcastically saying, “Lol yeah refs needed more power.” Fox is also upset that the League will be handing out technical fouls in those cases. He also addressed the point that technical fouls result in fines and suspensions.

Although the idea of flopping fouls is good conceptually, proper outlines must be implemented. A rule change of this magnitude has the power to change the whole outcome of the game, wherein actual fouls could potentially be called flops and penalize a team.

The league first tested the new rules during the Summer League and is looking to push ahead with the changes. The rule is set to minimize flopping plays in the NBA and will likely stay if it does bring changes.

With all the rule changes coming in, fans are wondering what flopping actually means in the NBA rulebook. According to the NBA, flopping is ”a physical act that reasonably appears to be intended to cause the officials to call a foul on another player.” In other words, it is an act of exaggerating contacts or acting as if one happened.

The act of flopping is, however, different from selling a contact. Flopping is more concerned with deceiving the officials than with overemphasizing actual fouls. Zack Zarba, a 15-year NBA referee, stated, “I think people get confused sometimes with the selling of a call as opposed to flopping. The selling of a call is just showing what happens … if someone pretends to get hit and falls down when there’s actually no contact, that would be a flop.”

The flop is one of the dramatic elements of basketball and the new rule changes will have a significant impact on the game. Referees will now have to pay much closer attention to whether a player is flopping or just selling a foul.
